$150 should get you somewhere in Manhattan..
Long Island City queens shouldn't run you more than $100 and is a world better than NJ.. Brooklyn (downtown, Park Slope or Williamsburg) is an option too. All are safe. Personally i'd rather stay in Brooklyn or Queens than NJ: closer, winds up cheaper (MTA subway no NJ transit bus or trains) and saves precious time. Also has culture and local happenings. Even staying in a 2* in the Upper west side totally beats a 4* in NJ for me.. don't be afraid to immerse yourself in local culture. Heck, best time I ever had in a hotel in NYC was in a East Village with a shared bathroom.. Madonna stayed in the room I was in when she was up and comming.. very few tourists, very new york.. no SUBWAY or IHOP to speak of.

Wicked is very rarely on TKTS but I have seen it before. If it does show up on there it will sell out very quickly.
Best suggestion IMO is to download the TKTS app for your phone and check it for a few days in the morning, it will give you an idea on what shows up, and if you check later on in the day you can get an idea of how fast things sell out. The app streams live what is available, which you can't see on the TKTS website. Also - which shows are popular and which are not fluxuates weekly so what is popular one week may not be popular the next week.Last edited by brunes; Jul 25th, 2012 at 12:01 PM.

Want to take my fiance to New York, first time for both of us, we'll be driving there.
I need good hotel, $100 a day would be awsome, doesn't have to be in heart of the city.
We're also clueless on what to do there, we're young, some shopping with RFD prices would be nice, walk around the heart of the city, maybe stop by the statue of liberty.
Overall we're on a tight budget and with no clue on what to sight see there.

Any good bar recommendation?
Nothing expensive, can accept casual wear (or just no jeans) and distinctively New York.

We've decided to go to New York instead of Boston this coming September. After looking at Manhattan prices, we are leaning towards staying in Long Island City. The most obvious pro is cost saving. What about the cons? Is it dangerous? Too far from Manhattan? What are some good hotels in LIC? We're thinking of bidding via Priceline. Thanks!

Get a place next to Newark airport (they tend to be cheaper). In the morning, drive to Newark Penn Station, park your car there ($10-15) and take a PATH train ($2 per person per ride) to 34th. Take a PATH back in the evening, pick up your ride, go to your hotel. Repeat daily.

Considering buying tickets for Wicked....cost from the website is $165 for orchestra. Does the show ever sell out on a weekday evening....since there's no discount, am I taking a huge risk by buying same day tickets / or buy ticket day before when I get there?

As first timers on a romantic trip, is it wise to drive in NYC?

What is "distinctively New York?"
I personally like jazz and one of the main reason I visit NYC every so often is for its jazz scene. The biggest surprise I had was St. Nick's Pub in Harlem (unfortunately it's closed http://www.yelp.ca/biz/st-nicks-pub-new-york).
Some places you might enjoy like I do:
Birdland - close to TS (on Monday night, try http://www.castpartynyc.com/)
Fat Cat - West Village (livelier scene)

Not sure where you live, but maybe it's better for you to see Wicked through this offer for the Montreal show:
http://www.travelzoo.com/ca/local-de...tainment/21845
I think my wife managed to get discounted Wicked tickets from Travelzoo; but I can't remember if it was for the show in SFO or NYC.
Anyway, if you decide to see it in Montreal, you may want instead to watch this site (http://www.travelzoo.com/entertainment/new-york/) for discounted Broadway tickets.
