most newsgroups will max out your connection
and yes theres full movies and stuff
grab a newzgroup account, download newsbin pro, and find some NZBs to load into newsbin to download.
also download quickpar.
after stuff is downloaded run the .par2 file in quickpar to see if its damaged and needs repair.. if it does find the par files in the nzb and download them if theyre not already and bam shell be fixed.
on a side note, ive been a member of digigroups and cant complain.. they dont auto renew your service thye just send an invoice.. but thing is, if you dont pay you still get service for a while (dono how long but i just noticed my service is expired but it still works for a month now)
so im making the switch to this offer. i seen it somewhere else before but didnt want it but im tinking the retention is better then digigroups and its a few bucks cheaper a month with more connections.
digigroups is $40/3month with 16 connections i think, but they only guarantee 30day retention (ive got around 100day retention with them before)
200 day retention would be killer!

I was having problems connecting to astraweb last night - turns out the DNS servers I was using (Verizon's 4.2.2.2 and 4.2.2.1 servers) were not for some reason resolving astraweb..
I then switched over to the OpenDNS servers at 208.67.222.222 and 208.67.220.220.. bingo, they resolved the Astra domain no problem.
Wierd.. I guess I could have also tried my ISP's DNS servers, but I'm fine with OpenDNS.

So I'll share my little setup I've tuned over the years.
Sabnzbd - newsgroup client/web interface/auto download, par, unrar, and categorize
I was talking about sabnzbd with someone yesterday and I hadn't heard of it before - I've been using Newsleecher for quite some time (too long I guess, since the version I use doesn't even support SSL), so it's time to either upgrade or look at sabnzbd.. I'll check it out.
Thanks!

what is considered to be the best newsgroup client? I've been using alt.binz.

I suppose that's a personal preference. I think the interface is nice, but I don't consider it far superior to many of the other sites out there these days. Then again, I don't mind spending an extra 2-3 minutes searching multiple sites for what I want.
But I will concede that $10 is not much to pay for convenience if you do in fact feel their interface outclasses the competition.

Or go get Newsleecher and use the built in Supersearch feature. DL what you want while it Verifies and extracts your DLs.

True that. Just be careful what you download. If you download just dvd movies and mp3's your chance of getting virus from them are practically zero since they are not executed, just data for an application to use. As a side note, some AV are now reporting heuristics hits on years old cracks. I just am not sure now how valid these hits are.

Bwahaha, that is hilarious. People are amazing

Can anybody comment on this compared to Giganews? I've been with GN for something like 6 years, but this is literally half price... would definitely not hurt.
Opinions appreciated.

and its at 1MB/sec speeds?
"online career"??? LOL.
Spam and viruses can be found anywhere online; use your common sense and install the appropriate protection applications. The good thing is that the spam are just posted messages you can ignore/delete and create filters for.
Email has spam but that doesn't mean you're not going to use email right?
No it's highly unlikely you will see a full 4.7+GB movie posted as a single file. It is more likely it will be posted as multiple split rar files with parity files for redundancy.
With a decent provider the download speed will be dependent on your network connection.

Giganews is probably the best, but expensive.

nzbTV - Auto download for tv shows, queue up by season, works with newzbin
So with sabnzbd I make the web interface available from outside and I can queue up stuff from other computer or phone. It also sorts any program or shows by name and season. Tons of options I'm not even using. No more having to look for stuff or unraring, done all automatically.

Thanks. Sabnzbd looks awesome. I was using altbinz for the longest time, but I may just make the jump. Web interface + RSS Reading/automatic queueing are some of the features I found lacking in Alt.Binz (maybe they added it now, I have an old version).
Good thing too... I'm sitting here in training and was thinking of a design on how I could write myself a little application to parse RSS feeds to queue up shows automatically. Go ahead, call me a nerd
