[Atmosphere] Atmosphere - Marmot Tent

https://www.atmosphere.ca/categories/ge ... 98093.html

I am new to camping but like I do with all things before I buy...I researched.

This Marmot Catalyst 3 person tent was the best bang for my buck that I came across. Solid reviews from a reputable brand. Not the lightest tent out there but for under $200 I don't think you'll find a better 3-person tent.

$197.99+tax ($223.73 all in) after you apply the 10% email list coupon code. Over 40% off the regular price.

The tent also comes with the footprint (goes under the tent) which are $40+ if purchased separately. Most tents do NOT include the footprint.

Excited to try mine out in a couple weeks.
Happy camping!

Looks like a good tent. I have an old Marmot Area 51 that still works great.

For tent newbies, it's wise to be realistic about the nominal sizing of tents. This one is 65" wide. So, unless you're super-thin, it would be pretty crowded to jam in three full-size adults comfortably.

Of course if you are all under 5'5" you'd have plenty of room sleeping crosswise with 88" length. :-)

Don't forget 4% CB from GCR.

I have a Hotcore mantis 3 and it's pretty comfortable sleeping side by side with 3 with 70.5" width.

Just leave your packs outside under the vestibules (easy when you have two!) I really appreciate having two doors when there are 3 in the tent though.

You can also reduce UV wear and tear on your rainfly by taking an extra tarp with you. Like a cheap 6' x 8' tarp covering over your tent. Princess Auto has one for like $3.99 I think. Cheap insurance in the long run as buying a new rainfly later can cost a bit.

Also check out army surplus stores for paracord. My local surplus store (Creative Outdoors in the GTA at HWY7/East Beaver Creek) has 30' used OD green paracord for $3.00. I think it's $10 for new 50' black paracord. Nothing wrong with the used parachute cord for tarp use or hanging your bags to keep Yogi bear and friends from tearing up your bag. Just don't be repelling off it and you'll be ok.

Marmot makes good tents, and yes for under $200, that's a great deal. Definitely better than any Coleman or Woods tent that you'd buy at CT or Wally Mart. Last year I scored an MSR Elixir 3 for $209 + tax at Atmosphere. They're almost $400 new. I remember they were also clearing out the North Face Homestead Roomy 2 for $169. That deal was insane, but I didn't need a 3rd tent.

And for those looking into this deal, keep in mind a 3 person tent is actually a tent for 2 adults. No more. Unless you're in a dire emergency situation where you absolutely NEED to squeeze in a third.

Good point about size. We intend to only ever have 2 adults in this tent. From research and talking to sales reps they all pretty much concurred that you can comfortably fit 1 less adult than the tent is advertised for. I'm not a huge person (6 ft, 175lbs) but don't want to be cramming 3 adults into this unless we absolutely have to.

I have this tent - it's good for price. Have stuffed it in a 10L compression sack and brought it backpacking but yes at 6lbs it is on the heavier side of the spectrum.

Good entry-level tent for people looking for something a step above big-box store brands. At regular price there are better options but at $200 this is a good deal.

You will need to buy additional stakes to fully stake the fly as they only include something like 6 stakes but there are in total 12 stake out points.

No chance you're getting 3 people in the 3P but good for couples, fits the MEC Reactor 6.5 double sleeping pad perfectly.

Here is a useful review of the 2P:

I looked at the MEC Camper 3 tent before buying the Marmot. That is a more direct comparison. The MEC Camper 2is that much smaller than the Marmot Catalyst so not even an apples to apples comparison. The MEC Camper 3 is solid and well reviewed (I have friends that own one as well) but I didn't think it was any better at $70+ more expensive than the Marmot.

I'm new to camping but is the Marmot tent better than any of these brands, Sportz Footprint, Burton Whetstone, World Famous and Rockwater?

That's a pretty sweet deal on the Marmot.

If someone is looking for something lighter (~1.3 kg) and cheaper (~$100), but also smaller (2 person) and probably a bit less durable, there's the Nature Hike cloud up 2, I have it, fits 2 adults (very snuggly), but it's pretty well built, comes with a footprint and quite versatile if you want to save even more weight.

Never heard of the first two, but WF and Rockwater are far from high-end.

Marmot is a respected brand used by serious outdoors people and should last a long time. There are lots of reviews online.

Agreed, Marmot is a respected outdoors company specialising in tents and outdoor clothing for campers, hikers, etc.
Marmot, MSR, MEC, Big Agnes, North Face, Mountain Hardwear, all respected companies that make good tents.

The North Face talus 3 and Mountain Hardwear Optic 2.5 are comparable in price and size to the Marmot Catalyst 3, just don't know if there would be any difference quality and durability wise. Actually thinking on getting the talus 4 for the extra room.
