[Atmosphere] Marmot Catalyst 2p Tent

Here's a great deal on a quality tent, if you're backpacking and looking to go light and small. I've seen it in person and will fit 2 people no problem. Or one person very comfortable. Marmot is a quality reputable tent maker.

On sale for $149, down from $259.

Notable features:
-Rain fly with dual vestibule, on each side
-2 doors
-footprint is included (normally tent makers charge extra for these $30+). A must if you want your tent to last
-Total Weight: 5 lbs 3 oz (2.36 kg)

Great deal! Wish I could convince myself I need this but I mostly go car camping with the 4 person "instant" coleman tents.

This is miles above the Coleman. Just wait till it rains or it gets windy!

Don't forget about the 10% off coupon for signing up for their newsletter.

I have one of these and it's hard to beat in terms of value, but my next tent I'm going to splurge a bit for something better (probably an MSR hubba, but that's more than double the price of this one).

Different prurposes. Colelan specialise in camoing tens while Marmot is backpacking (Catalyst is for that).

The markup for Canadians is pretty outrageous. MSRP for US is only $170.

Yep, outdoor gear prices in Canada are ridiculous. The funny thing is that even Canadian companies like Arc'teryx are cheaper to buy in the US. Go figure.

This review sums up this tent pretty much exactly to how I feel about it.

Pros: Good headroom, good organization, easy to set-up, durable
Cons: Heavy, short in length
Bottom line: A value-driven, durable choice for car-camping and the occasional short-distance backpacking trip.

I read about 10 reviews both marmot website and atmospher site. Neither say it's small or heavy. Guess it's up to ones personal fit and feel but seems like a very solid higher end budget minded tent.

Also looks at other markmot tents and the Leigh test they have is 4.2 lbs so at 5lbs this does not seem like a whale in comparison.

Some people have very high standards in regards to things like that. There is a backpackinglight.com forum. I haven't been on there in months, but it seemed like when comparing gear, if item A is 10% lighter than item B, but item B is advantageous in every other category, item A will generally be considered the better of the two. People like that are referred to as "gram-weenies"

I went to Atmosphere and got a Mountain Hardwear Optic 3.5 tent for $149 + tax, down from $399! Well, the tag said $299 regular price, and someone for some reason put a half price price tag on it. I think the $299 price was from a year or two ago as the regular price, now regular price is $369 or $399 depending on the retailer. Either way, it was the only tent on the shelf with that big of a discount. Most others were just 20%. Huge YMMV here, as I find different stores have different discounts. I wasn't planning on buying another tent, but for $149, I just couldn't pass it up...I just got lucky.
