I think it depends on if you are letting it drift into energy saver mode or physically shutting the monitor off every time. Either way I would say the effect on the life would be extremely negligable.

I *HATE* it when the taskbar is hidden. It's not just keep track of my tasks, it tells me when I've got IMs or e-mails. It's an essential monitoring device for me!

your question in the title is "auto-hide taskbar, yes or no?" and the question in the poll is "taskbar always on top?". I hate auto-hide so I picked no thinking the question on the title and the poll would be the same, but when I realized that the question is the other way around, it was too late!

If I'm really tight for space (ie. on 800X600 res). Otherwise, it's always on top.

Of course the past several years, I've gone back to viewing the taskbar...and now lately...I don't have a need I guess....what with this behemoth 20" widescreen that I have now

i keep it (auto)-hidden... it looks cleaner that way
... and if there's an im, it'll blink in orange and i'll know
... if i need to multitask, there's always alt +tab
