Auto insurance renewal time, feedback and recommendations needed

Hi all

I just received the renewal letter, I am with BelAir
They quoted me 2400/y, one way insurance for car and house(apartment), Ford Focus 2002
Had a minor accident around 6 years ago and a traffic ticket 5 years ago

Questions:
1. I heard that the tickets and the accident records are erased after an X number of years. Is it true? After how many?
2. How is Allstate Insurance? They quoted me 1700/y for the same as BelAir
3. Any recommendations where to look for a better rate?

Some companies will give you as high as a 9 or 10 star driver if you are 9 or 10years from an at fault accident; however, the at fault accident will remain on your record for 6 years, so it sounds like now you are a 6 star driver. Convictions remain on your record for 5yrs.

This is what I heard too but just to see how low they can go I said I have no accidents hoping that after 6 years they will not be able to see that
They did not say anything...do they check that when they are with you on the phone to give you the quote?

no, however, if you are lic'd and accident free for 10+ years, INTACT for example will give you a 9 star rating. On the auto application it only requires to know the last 6yrs for accidents &lic suspensions, 3 for tickets. This is why we ask -

if you tell the broker you are clear for 6 yrs, they will most likely rate you accordingly. If you say, 10 yrs clear, then the quote may reflect this ...at the time of application, an autoplus report will be pulled which will show your entire insurance history...so if you say you are 10 yrs with no at faults, and 1 at fault shows up 7 yrs ago, you'll still get the 6 star rating but won't qualify for the higher star rating if that company had one.

Most companies their top star is 6 anyway, however as i mentioned, there are a few that have higher stars available.

i got TD meloche monnex. if you are an alumni of many of the universities around here (for me, it was UWO), you can get a group rate that is cheaper. i am paying about $1700-something a year. one accident, no tickets (yet). this is not including home insurance, but i got a quote for that and it is about $19/month and my car insurance would go down by about $10/month if i get home insurance with them too.

Not sure if Post Graduate studies will make me member of an Alumni. A member of my family is enrolled in the CGA program. Would that help?

out of curiosity, what was your quote and what is covered?

i think post grad studies makes you an alumni! they don't even double check. i just told them over the phone that i went to UWO and they accepted it. they basically just want to sell you insurance. in fact, they were the ones that brought up the alumni thing when i called, not me.

years ago I tried Meloche Monex and they asked me for an ID number.
Not sure how they could check your affiliation but they do check...

i never got asked for any sort of ID number, so you could try again. i had called their customer service(?) line. i think i even asked them if they needed to see proof or anything and they said no.

being a member or not of an association has nothing to do with rating, just a discount you are able to obtain.
