BB: 2X Motorola T4905 GMRS/FRS Radios + NiCD $24.99
Pretty sweet price...
http://www.bestbuy.ca/catalog/prodde...gon=&langid=EN
2x T4905 Radios
2x NiCd Battery Packs
1x Charging Stand
1x Power Adapter
2x Belt Clip
Coolest feature is its scanning mode.
It scans thru all 22 channels and decodes the sub audible tone, so that you can communicate with the person it locks on to.
From my house (Vancouver side of knight street bridge) I can clearly hear lock into the Night Market Staff on Channel 7 sub code 25.
Ended up being < $30 bux after tax.
Add: Oh btw, the sensitivity of this radio is amazing, i was picking up whole conversations when my coworkers uniden was only getting static.
Enjoy!

as a lover of 2 way radios, 4.8km is frustrating..
i have a 19km, the highest available to consumers.. in a city it's only 3-4km.., so unless you intend for close range use or use in "The Wild", it's not suitable..

Now if you went snowmobiling and there were trees in the way or if you were on the opposite sides of the mountain,or if it was snowing, then the distance will vary quite a lot. But, I'm sure it beats being in the city (especially downtown) with huge steel skyscrapers everywhere, and thick cement walls!
*Note: I have been monitoring the price of FRS/GMRS 2 way radios for over 2 years now and the price don't change a lot. Unlike computers, these don't really go out of date quickly if at all. The only thing that will change about them is the size and distance. To increase distance, you just increase power output(I think, correct me if I'm wrong), and if you increase it by a lot, then the radio will not be a radio anymore, it will have to be a cancer box!
And for size, I think that this size is good, anything smaller and you will sit down and say "Aww Crap! Now I need to buy another 2-way radio!" (If you know what I mean
)

If your on 2 different sides of a mountain you wont hear eachother no matter what.
To increase range you can do a few things, A) As mentioned increase power, but Industry Canada limits power output of FRS to 0.5 watts, and GMRS to 2 watts. Most handhelds wont use more than 1 watt due to the fact it KILLS batteries. B) Increase the selectivity and sensitivy of the radio, as I mentioned before my these motorolas could hear a message my coworkers uniden could not, therefore it more sensitive. This is usually the difference between cheap and expensive radios. This doesnt use as much additional power as increasing the RF power.
Being in a forest does attenuate your signal, but being downtown is a different matter, most buildings these days have coatings to reflect sunlight etc. these coatings also reflect RF signals. Unless your IN the building and thats a whole different story.
BTW Some lady lost her wallet at the night market, there was about $200 bux in it... OUCH...

Lets just hope in the future we can just communicate telepathically over long distances.

i wish i could get a hold of the government/commercial radios.. which use cellphone waves? not sure.. think they can go extreme distances..
push to talk looks cool too, haven't looked into it
I bought CT 89.99 GMRS Motorola which are 19km (2 watts).. if they come up with more, i'd buy it
like others said, if you're in the outdoors camping, the range they say pretty much applies
in cities, 19 km becomes 4-5km, so 4.8 probably becomes 1.5KM? or less
I bought it to keep my gf on a leash, hehe. Actually for safety and better communication, but i'm thinking PTT on cell phones now. Anyone have experience with this? I believe telus mike is the only one offering in Canada? maybe bell

And the Cobra being 3watts wont ever be sold in canada unless they change the rules.

I understand FRS is free, but I am a little confused about GMRS. From what I have heard, it is illegal to use the GMRS service on these radios unless you purchase a license? Is this true?

These sound like a good deal for the price, and Im looking for some for team mountain bike racing. However, I would prefer NiMH over these NiCD.
Anyone seen a good deal on good range NiMH radios?

May 27th, 2006 02:36 PM #14You only need license if you are in the U.S., they are paranoid so you need a license. In Canada you don't need a license, because its a FREE COUNTRY

May 27th, 2006 02:36 PM #15If the radios Tx power is less than 2 watts, no licence is needed.
