Will switch (and stay) with Koodo, if Fido won't sweeten my current plan. I want to use one email address to receive the Koodo referral discount code (which never heard about until this moment), and another email address when I actually set up the account with Koodo. I wonder if that is ok. If yes, I should hook up with a current Koodo customer here.
The article you linked is from September 29, 2011 and the phone was running Gingerbread. The current phone is running ICS with an updated radio. These two changes may affect the volume, I'm not sure.

I rooted my phones with cm10(4.12) and love them. It runs so smooth and never reboot on me even once.I did that to my friend's phone and he want to sell his S3 To keep this S2X. Rooted this phone is a way to go imo.
I also unlocked them both to work on the Mobilicity and Winds. It take a little bit more time to log on the network for your first time activation(7 to 10 Min). But it works perfectly on winds and Mobilicity for sure. Also for a better vioce quality , just checked the Noise Supression on your call menu. It is a must for the cm 10 Rom I heard...

What's the difference between these 2 models?

What does "rooting" do exactly?

I rooted mine so I can use DroidVPN for speakout data plan. Some apps require phone to be rooted for it to work.

The i9100 has a physical home button, the s2x does not. The screen on the i9100 is slightly smaller (4.3 vs 4.52) and different internals.

Comparison between the two: http://www.gsmarena.com/compare.php3?id ... hone2=3621

Rooting gives you "administrator" access to system files.

Thanks for the info. I bought the one from Best Buy and was worried it wasn't what I was looking for.
It will be ok I think.

Thanks for the info. I am just a basic user so the phone should be ok. I wanted to be able to just put my rogers SIM card in and go.

You'll have to unlock the phone before you can use it on Rogers.

Did you get the Koodo T989 or Virgin i9100?

You can buy a code from ebay or another online unlock company. Mobileincanada.com is a very reliable dealer and the code is $20.

If you want to unlock it for free, you would need to root the phone, install busybox, and the free unlock app from the Play store.

I bought 2 so that is $40.

How hard is it to root and then install busy box and the unlock app?

What OS is on the phone? Rooting and unlocking is pretty easy with the i9100. I had the Bell version and it was very simple.

Slightly off the topic question: anyone know where to get genuine Spigen SGP screen protector for this phone in good price? Or other screen protector you would recommend is also appreciated. Thanks.

Wow, $13 for a screen protector. I bought a $1 from ebay. If screen gets messed up, time for a new phone anyway... All my phones lasts 2+ years some with plastic screens but those with glass screens seems to last longer in terms of scratches.

If you're running 2.3.0 or higher, you can root is using Superoneclick. Then download busybox and Galaxy unlock from the Play store.

Please start from the very beginning. What is superoneclick?

If you are a complete noob to rooting and flashing, you might want to do some more reading on XDA. There's always the possibility of bricking the phone. If that happens and you don't know how to fix it, it could wind up costing more than the cost of the unlock code to dix it.
