Beach town recommendation in Southern California

Looking for a one-week getaway somewhere in Southern California with a 3yo excluding San Diego (we went there last year). Flying in and out of LAX. Prefer to rent a place by the ocean as our home base for the week.

Thoughts on Santa Monica?

I like Laguna Beach (quaint atmosphere)

Can’t beat Santa Monica though with the proximity to L.A & all its attractions.

Both are good options really depends what else your plans are.

Playa Del Rey is next door to LAX, and is actually a decent beach. The planes flying in/out directly overhead are either a huge plus or a huge minus (depending on your personality!) It's also less crazy than Santa Monica (but still relatively close by).

Oh I didn't think Santa Monica would be quite busy. No wonder accommodations are super pricey there. Looking for more low key / quaint towns. Not planning on doing touristy stuff. Thanks everyone!

Santa Monica would be very expensive. It is a wealthy community and the rentals there are rather expensive.

We have found going south of Santa Monica (Venice Beach, Marina/Playa Del Ray, etc.) has more reasonable prices.

Santa Monica is a great place to stay and I would highly recommend it if your budget allows it. It's a great location near LAX, has a lot of "touristy" things to do, and also has a train into LA.

La Jolla is nice but technically part of San Diego County, I believe. Not sure if this is further out than what you were looking for.

Newport Beach, Santa Barbara or San Clemente. You're welcome...

El Matador State Beach south of Santa Barbara was nice.

Venice beach is shady as hell, Santa Monica is nice but expensive, as are Laguna and Newport
