IMO it's cheaper to just build your own knife set since these block sets have redundant pieces. How many of those knives will you actually use?

Four Star chef's knife alone is $120. It's a great value for a great set of knives.

Got it online. The 20% coupon that I got via their email newsletter is "in-store or online".

Get the Germany or Miyabi. Spain and China one are bad.

That is normally true, but for $169 you’d be hard pressed to find better value.

So does signing up for the newsletter give the 20% online coupon or not?

Also on topic. Got these last year for 199.99-20%.

Great knives. Only used them a handful of times though.

They had the 5* for 240 or 280-20% but the consensus from the threads was that the 4* is best value

Someone help me as im a knife noob.

We use some shitshow knife to cut stuff and steak knives (Lagostina) to cut meat. The most expensive thing i own in the kitchen is a pair of Cutco knives sold by a door-to-door salesman back in the day. Is my wife going to appreciate this as a gift and does the average user really need all these knives or just one or two 'go to knives'. Last thing i need is more stuff on my counters or spending my youth maintaining knives.

I like the feel of full bolster knives, but sharpening becomes cumbersome (ie need some way to grind down the bolster otherwise you get a dead area).

If you are questioning whether or not you need new knives... I'm going to with the obvious and say that's a hard no.

If you use knives regularly, you know whats bad and what is good and how having good knives in the kitchen is necessary. <---- this does not sound like you.

Yeah I don't know how the common person would deal with the bolster / tang. My advice is not to get a knife with it. I'm not even sure what the function of it is... So the knife doesn't snap in 2?
