will be used mostly at home. kids are 3 and 6.

im good with OS installs and fixes. im mainly concerned with hardware, build of the the laptop. ive noticed some laptops are way more flimsy and some have delicate fan mechanisms.

Solid choice without breaking the bank. Just bought one for a buddy and was impressed with it. Nice that this one has the 8th gen cpu. Other considerations that dont have 8th gen are that zenbook for $900 linked above, MS store has an xps 13 for $1129 but smaller ssd and would also look at the new inspiron 13 7000 series. Did a live chat with a Dell rep a couple of days ago and he offered it to me for $980. This one does have the 8250u cpu. If budget is tight stick with the Swift and maybe Costco will stock it with the 8250u cpu soon as then you could buy it there and get the automatic 2yr warranty.
whats better? this one, or the dell inspiron 13 7000? thanks

Have an older model of this (6th gen i5 instead of 8th gen, everything else the same). Its a great laptop. Picked it up last boxing day for $649. Battery life is outstanding. Like some have mentioned the screen does lack brightness compared to others but the colours and viewing angles are still very good.

I don't call it hot, warm at the best.

Nothing better than many of the cheaper last gen processor equipped ultrabooks except newest CPU. I wouldn't care too much about CPU for this class laptops, I would rather care more about screen quality and battery life.
Normally I would agree but this year Intel says the new 8th gen processors are supposed to boost performance by 40%. This is done by doubling the cores and further tweaking the chips. https://www.cnet.com/news/intel-bets-on ... ore-chips/

I am looking for a new laptop so I have been watching the market closely. It would be a bad time to buy a laptop with a 7th Gen cpu with 8th Gen starting to come out. Also AMD's ryzen laptop processors are coming out soon too.

From a value perspective, the Acer is better at $799 as you’re only going to gain a bit better display and sleeker body for $180 more for the Dell. Just my two cents but for me to buy the Dell it would have to be only $100 more.

Because it's easy to miss above and because this could be important to those with spotty wifi: no Ethernet port. Thanks, Apple, we all appreciate your trend-setting ways.

I'm holding out for the model with no CPU.

Yes, the left shift key is shortened, and the Enter key has a different shape. I think it's fine though, with enough practice, muscle memory will get used to the extra reach to hit that enter key. So far I have missed it a couple times and hit the \ key instead (which on US keyboard, appears above the flat-rectangular Enter key; but on the French-Canadian keyboard, appears to the left of the "Tetris-block shaped" Enter key).
Picked up the Asus UX430 open box for $749 in August at Bestbuy with the French-Canadian keyboard and just remapped the \ key as a "SHIFT" key instead to the registry using Sharpkeys. So much better!

well if you need to really tether your notebook to Ethernet cable than adding a USB Ethernet dongle is not difficult.

It might be.

If it's an i5-8250U its performance figures are slightly below to those of a i5-7300HQ, with 1/3rd of its power consumption, according to this article: Intel Core i5-8250U (Kaby Lake-R, 8th generation) benchmarks and early impressions

Intel Core i5-8250U specs (summary) @ notebookcheck
I did read about the 8th gen being 30% better for some CPU's over their predecessors.

Thank you AMD.

  1. I would add at least 12" - didn't use my 11" Dell 7140 tablet/keyboard much but I use my 13" Yoga 720 a lot more especially when our second floor, where my desktop is, is much warmer before the a/c cools the house down.
  2. Digitizer pen input though I haven't used my pen much but likely nice for students.
  3. 7th gen Intel that can output 4K
  4. Fingerprint is nice to have -- came with the Yoga
  5. Backlit keyboard too -- also with the Yoga
