That would be very low end for a gaming machine considering it's still using an Ultrabook processor and the video card is slightly mediocre. It's probably fine if you want to game a little but if you want real performance, this isn't it.

I'm pretty sure there aren't many games on the market right now that would tax even a ULV i7. I agree with you on the GPU though. For something of this price range a 970m is probably possible.

Considering a ULV i7 are basically just desktop i3 parts that are clocked lower, ya games can tax one. Will it be a bad bottleneck? probably not but I can certainly tell that my desktop i5 runs circles around my laptops ULV i7 and they're both 4th gens.

reviews saying that you had to go mid settings to get a decent performance on this HP.. does that make the alienware better?
thanks
The Dell has a better graphics card and more RAM, the HP has a better processor. They're still both jack of all trade laptops that probably won't be very good at gaming nor or very portable so unless you're specifically looking for a machine to mostly be station to station with a few games here and there, I'd pass.

With next generation of nvidia chip just announced, buying any GPU related product will be some terrible timing. As the next gen will likely blow current gen out of the water and deprecate like hell.

The Inspiron 7559 is better imo even if it only has half the ram of the Alienware. The 7559 has a much better CPU(i5-6300HQ) with the similar GPU (960M with 4GB) and 1TB HDD (with 8GB cache, just a small extra really). Unless your running multiple VMs you will need need the 16GB of ram (unless you feel like messing with ramdisk). The 7559 only cost $1150 and their online Click to Chat are paid on commission (so you can usually snag an extra $20 - $50 off)

Thanks for the pointer. i find this Inspiron with SSD option is very tempting .. any idea on when they send out coupons/scratch and save-like?

Does it? You mean IS it, don't you? And no, Alienware isn't a hot commodity anymore.

The laptop has a dual core processor so it's definitely not worth it unless you enjoy 720p gaming at medium-low settings.

Yes, this is a hot deal.

960M is a decent GPU especially in a 13" form factor.

Build quality and display quality are top notch.

The only thing is lack of SSD but can be easily upgraded yourself.

be careful, this is a DUAL core processor. you're better off spending the same amount of money on a lenovo or a dell which is packed with the same GPU and has a QUAD core processor.
