They want to charge and extra $250 for the 256GB HDD? Come on... 128GB flash could be had on Amazon for $38. Serious margins.

Do you know what the margins are on other brands?
Why can't Apple set their on margins?

I own a MacBook Pro that has only has a 128GB solid-state drive and I find it has more than enough storage.
If you need more storage just buy a Seagate external hard drive. 1TB or 1.5TB drives go on sale all the time for under $100

A new one for $20 cheaper than an apple certified refurb. I'll say this is a pretty fair deal...

Beyond typical Apple price gouging, I'd really avoid the MBA right now. Old, poor quality low res TN screen and 3 generation old CPU. Unless you absolutely need the cheapest mac right now it's best to hold off for a refresh.

Agreed but even so... this is a solid computer with amazing battery life. If you are just in need of a computer for school or browsing the internet and doing basic computer activities, this is still a great buy.

If you really need it or are buying it for a kid (MBA are the most common laptop I see for students in my classes) it’s pretty decent. They’re solid and will last you many years (I’m still running the latest OS revision on my 2010 MBA albeit a good bit more sluggish than years ago). Otherwise there’s a good chance of a redesign this fall. The low dpi screen on these look rough compared to the MacBook (Pro) or even an iPad.

If that's all you need a computer for, why not just consider a Chromebook for 1/3 to 1/4 the cost?

I have an early-2015, great condition, MBA, 1.6 GHz, Intel Core i5, 4GB.

I am guessing this isn't a "huge" upgrade by any stretch? Debating selling it (???) and paying the difference to have a new warranty etc.

Alright, I don't want to be that APple shill but this is inaccurate.

First of all, yes Apple IS charging more than needed for 256GB HDD. Full agreed.

However, you can' compare the SSD in the Air to the $38 one from Amazon. Those $38 ones are cheap NAND flash or even as bad as eMMC flash memory. Apple, despite what you think, do use higher quality NAND flash memory. They also uses a NVME controller on the SSD that allows it to data transfer via PCIe standard instead of SATA, which lets the SSD to read/write at almost 4-6 gigs a second. The cheap Amazon SSD would be lucky to hit 400megs a second, at BEST. (the SSD on the Macbook would be about 10 times faster, read and write)

Also, there are many benchmarks and shows they can (but not necessary always better) perform better than the Samsung 970 EVOs, which are really really good SSDs.
So a real comparasion would be to this

You're still overpaying, sure. But let's not go to the extremes and compare the SSD storage to a $38 SSD.

Modest upgrade...

On June 5, 2017, Apple quietly updated the MacBook Air "Core i5" 1.6 13" (Early 2015) with a modestly faster 14-nm "Broadwell ULT" 1.8 GHz Intel "Core i5" processor (5350U). This model otherwise is identical to late configurations of its predecessor apart from some identifiers.

This is a good point.

Years ago I would've picked this up for just browsing and light stuff.

Now I have a Chromebook and it works perfectly fine and they're cheap too.

Not sure if the Macbook Air has a place still.

Cool thanks! At first glance, you see the 4GB become an 8GB and 1.6<1.8 so I assumed it was worthy. In this case, will keep it.

Doubling the RAM would make switching between applications and tabs smoother. Do you keeps a lot of applications and tabs open?

It’s crazy that it’s been 2 years since I got a 2016 MBA 8gb ram model on sale for $999. Same price now and it’s the exact same machine, only with a 200mhz base clock increase.

It’s a good laptop and I use it daily, but be aware it’s got a 5th Gen cpu when we are late in the 8th Gen cycle now in every other thin and light laptop.
Always in search of a great deal....
