[Best Buy] RING Smart doorbell with Alexa combo $219.99

Looks like you would be getting the Amazon Echo Dot with Alexa for free. Original price $298

From PCMag's review: Requires subscription to view recorded video. No pre-buffered recording.

...It's a WTH design decision...

Yup, thats their business model, doorbell works for live view with no subscription (drop in whenever you like or answer when the bell rings) but recording is where it shines and its $3 monthly ($30 annually).
No pre-buffered recording.
Not sure about the doorbell 2 but I have the pro and mount cams and both do buffer few seconds prior to the actual trigger (you wont see that in live view though).

If it requires subscription, I am pretty sure the cheap a$$ RFD community must have a found a record-all-the-videos-on-a-free-dropbox/gdrive-cloud-based-or-local-server-based-dashcam-type recording solution to this problem. We the kind of community that likes premium best quality AAA kind $hit at a price error type price, what in the God's name is subscription

the Ring Doorbell Pro fixed the Ring 2's late motion trigger. I don't recommend anything BUT the Pro if you are hard wiring your doorbell.

USD $30 a year.
Without the sub, this cam is useless, unless you are home all day and stuck to the couch.

Well you can still answer a doorbell wherever you are as long as you have a phone with you, come to think of it, a subscription (recording) would do you no good if you just need to catch the delivery guy and tell him to leave/not leave a package by the door or yell at the neighbor to pick up after his dog while being in your front yard .. etc.
No subscription (recording) takes of the usability indeed but doesn't really make it useless, that said, I personally considered it an "added cost" and moved on.

Didn't know that, thanks for pointing it out, think they had to do that to save battery else camera would be constantly recording.

Yah I have the Doorbell 1 and wish I got the Pro. I'm pretty much am half way thru my door before it actual starts triggering/recording. Useless for security.

It's not a flaw. It's a design feature by the company where they give you barely enough but give the rest in part 2 if you choose to buy #tinfoilhatsonallthefcukingtime

ps. every company is like that. Electric toothbrushes, phones, printers you name it
