Go to T&T at night, a couple of hours before closing, and you can get a lot of their prepared food for about 40% off the original price. No tip required!!
Though my preferred strategy for eating in a pinch is to go to the grocery store to get raw ingredients, and cook it all myself.

Best Cheap Eats in Toronto
So with the recession hitting us I was looking for some good recommendations for some cheap food for both lunch and dinner. Doesn't have to be in any particular location as I think everyone could benefit from the thread.

agreed!
Your typical Chinese food. Not so much the westernized style, but somewhat. Lots of stir frys, noodles, rice etc... They have a dim sum section with all your fried and steamed goods!
My suggestions...
1. Coconut grove west of Bay and Dundas. They have small plate dinners around $2.99 (not sure if they raised prices yet).
2. Various Vietnamese Sandwich shops. North of Spadina and Dundas (north of). Sandwiches either vegetarian or meat for $1.50.
Vermacilli dishes under $4.00
Full PLate meals under $5.00
3. China Town Center Basement food court. Cheap eats! @ most take out counters $3.99 gets you any 3 items piled mountain high. It even includes a free soy milk.
Eat @ your own risk...
4. 5th Element is fine dining on a budget. Located at Bay and Wellsley.
Right now they have a 241 promo. It expires on May 3rd so by the time you read this it might be too late. The promo code is 'MP09' and you make reservations on their website.
But they always have deals.
5. Sign up to menuplace. They email you resturant promos from time to time. Some are good, some are bad. But you could always check online menus or call to see what the scoop is.
6. Wings! Theres an entire thread dedicated to this... But chains like Gabby's has 1/2 price wings on Mondays & Wednesdays.
Hooters has AYCE wings for $9.99 w/ a purchase of drink on i believe monday... But you can find out from their site.
7. Tobeys. Its a bar popular with the U of T students and the younger crowd in the area. Its located @ College and Bathurst.
Cheap food and drinks.
$3 shots
$10 pitchers
If your having a night out... you could get pretty loaded here for $20!Last edited by UrbanPoet; May 2nd, 2009 at 11:51 AM.
