How are the duties calculated & paid with CrossBorderPickup?

Does CBP use a calculator on their website while the item is still in the US and give you a $ fee, OR
do they bring the item across the border and Canada Customs assess a $ fee, gives the bill to CBP and they bring the item to their Canadian warehouse and send you the $ fee before you can pick it up?

They base it on the attached or included manifest or invoice in the package if one is included otherwise they ask the receiver to declare value and origin. Private eBay etc sales don't usually include an invoice whereas biz shipments will. You pay it all when you collect in Canada.
