When you bough your DVD drive/computer, did you have a software than came with it like PowerDVD or WinDVD oem version? It may be in the box.
If not VLC is also good and free but I did not test it for DVD. It's my backup player.
What is the sitting distance from the screen?
I'm asking because the controls may be small from where you sit. That's why I would recommend MIV Basic(check my signature). It's a free DVD player but with bigger buttons(HTPC) so it's easy to see but you will need a mpeg2 decoder. The basic DVD function are there.
I ripped my DVDs on the hard drive and use MIV to display a list(Frontend) and play them. I created a .MIS(title, description, age..) for each movie(optional). It's easier for my nieces/nephews to start the movie without having to search with Windows Explorer.
. If you don't like the internal player, you can configure an external player for IFO.
