Best option for buying a return plane ticket?

I'm looking to purchase a return ticket to Japan (from vancouver) sometime in the next month and i'm wondering where i should look to find the best prices? should i be looking at one of the ubiquitous online price comparison websites? or should i go directly through the airlines themselves, or even through a travel agent?

I've taken a look online and the prices i'm seeing are pretty steep so any help in finding me a cheap ticket would be greatly appreciated!
