While he's doing that, you should download the latest version of spellchecker for yourself. I think that's "best" for you.

The obvious thing to check would be the setting for
Tools->Internet Options->Advanced->Show Images
When you right-click on the image placeholder, what does the pop-up menu show? Is the "Show picture" option enabled or is it greyed out?_______________

In IE, go to Tools, Internet Options then to the Advanced tab.
Scroll down to the Multimedia section and make sure that "Show Pictures" is checked._______________Sure... I play guitar. Now. What are these strings for?

Who knows? Maybe IE is to blame...or some short of transparent proxy from his ISP
You can also give a shot to Opera

IE might be corrupt... To just reinstall IE, go to C:\windows\inf (it's a hidden folder - type it into the command line) and then find the file IE.INF
Right click on it and choose Install. It will then prompt you for the XP cd; browse to the i386 folder on the root of the disk and then click ok. It'll finish the install and then prompt you to restart._______________Sure... I play guitar. Now. What are these strings for?

I've seen this problem twice before.
And this is the solution that worked for me.
Check out your hosts file
\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\DRIVERS\ETC
[open hosts file with notepad]
The hosts file causes IE to time-out on pics if it has too many entries. I only put about 10-20 entries in my hosts file.
