This looks good and is getting down to my price range of max. $15/year for paid protection (spouse insists it doesn't work unless you pay for it so I have to buy one for her and if I don't buy in advance she will pay full price online and give her credit card for auto renewal robbery). I just pricematched the McAfee 2012 3 user at Futureshop.ca $69.99 to Staples that has it on for $19.99 this week to get it for $15 (with free delivery as I bought two to stack once one expires). Any way to priocematch this as both FS and BB don't seem to even have the 2013 version yet? I don't need one for two years now LOL but I like bitdefender.

I dont see the point if using anti virus
If the virus is not in the virus definition then your pc will still be infected plus this will slow down your computer
I always restore my laptop to factory default every 6 months
Why pay?

Different people do different things with PCs. If you are a moderately intelligent sole user that does emails and uses office etc then you may not need anything. If you surf for pron and warez then you would be foolish not to have something imo. It is possible I suppose that a virus definition is not in the software but nowadays the software companies update quickly so it is a highly unlikely occurrence.
Your question is a little myopic really - you do realize that people get viruses and it can be catastrophic for them if they don't back things up right? Assuming they have a legit version of Windows 7 they should get security essentials at least...

I would stick with Kaspersky. Currently FS and Best Buy has it on their promotion pricing and it's the 2013 model.

Bitdefender and Kaspersky scored the exact same on performance tests according to AV Comparatives.
http://av-comparatives.org/comparati...formance-tests
Therefore, Bitdefender is the better bang for the buck. This doesn't account for personal preference. If you're accustomed to Kaspersky and like it, by all means, buy it. But, it seems that bitdefender is every bit as good at a fraction of the price.Last edited by Canuckerr; Sep 17th, 2012 at 11:29 PM.

FYI - That link is only in regards to performance. They have many categories and you guys should check them out. They are #1 in regards to testing AV software.
But, I see what you're saying. Though, everyone of the big AV companies have free products. However, they also have paid products which provide more features. So you pay for the extra features and support._______________

Just bought 2012 Kaspersky for 14 dollars on eBay and same serial number works on 2013
1 full year. You can get it even cheaper. Kaspersky allows you to go back as far as 2011 and use it on 2013 model

In my experience Bit Defender was a pig on system resources. I bought the 2011 version for $9.99 a little over a year ago and was running a 6 core CPU and I think 8GB of ram and it had a noticeable impact on the system speed. Switched back to Kaspersky and system ran just fine.
On a side note Kaspersky does go on sale for $10-20ish a couple of times a year as well - most popular AV software does.

I used to use BitDefender until around 2009 as it was way to much of a resource pig.
I am not using avast but last week I had a virus that it didn't even identify, even if I scanned the exact file. I had to go to the registry, delete the run line, start the file from starting in the msconfig, then delete the file. Was a bit annoyed that avast didn't know about it.
