Black Out

Question about what part of my pc is kaput...

Recently had a black out on thursday night (friday morn) during he winter storm.
So my PC shut down multiple times (I dont have a surge protector...Yes i know this is my own fault)

Friday night it was on the screen that would prompt me to boot from

Safe mode
Safe mode with networking
Safe mode with DOS

Last known configuration

Start windows normally.

if i started windows normally..the windows xp splash screen would start then just crash.
I thought the OS got corrupted...so stuck in my xp cd and tried to run a repair and chkdsk. I got a message stating one or more files are corrupt or something.
my hdd is a sata hdd btw. so i decided to stick in my regular 30gb ide hdd, and got the same thing (crashes during xp splash screen), it would not want to boot up windows.
i tried reseating everything (memory, processor...) but still nothing

from experience what do you think the problem may be ? memory or processor?

maybe you power supply, did you try unplugging it for 10 seconds... and get this

yup tried that, and you can bet i have a surge protector

Update:

Replace memory and replaced power supply, still same result.

I stuck in my old 30 IDE hdd and decided to run a fresh install with xp on it.
once i got to the "Press F8" prompt it asked me if i wanted to rapair windows.

So i ran the repair (ran for 30 mins). It finally started up and go to the logon screen, but was really sluggish.

I put back my other 120 HDD (sata) and tried to boot up and it got a little farther in in the loading windows xp splash screen, then just crashed.

I dont want to to try to run a repair on my sata hdd, just incase it erases or over-rights the information, cause i have family pictures on it and other important stuff.

am i led to believe that its my processor?
i dont want to have to buy another processor

btw its an amd sempron 1800 on asus mobo.

Put the 30 Gig back in with the SATA drive still installed. Tell the BIOS to boot from the 30 Gig and not the SATA. You should be able to access the SATA drive and backup your pictures and data.

Assuming you have no password or drive encryption on the SATA drive.

After that is done, go do a repair installation on the SATA drive

I blew my power supply that night! My surge protector protection light is gone. Gonna have to get in on that Dell deal. Funny thing is my router, modem, printer, scanner, and mini-fridge were all on as well and they survived. I suspect its the crappy power supply that comes in the Antec II cases that couldn't handle it. I just picked up a $51 power supply from Staples and everything fired right up.
