Why wouldn't it be compatible?
Hardware is not the issue, it is the software. Make sure you get a software that has drivers for the recorder.

to the best of my knowledge, only vista supports blu-ray. Otherwise you should be okay hardware wise.

If you want playback for Blu-Ray, your video card and monitor/TV needs to support HDCP.

That's not true at all...I have played Blu-ray off XP Pro for the longest time and it works well. HD-DVD works really well too.
If you have a discrete video card, even a cheapie 8400GS like OP has, it supports both HD-DVD and BD fine as long as you have the proper software player.
Vista has better support for $hitty onboard solution like Intel GMA. Vista also render the picture better in certain software player like Total Media Theater. XP works but Vista is better. It does appear to me Intel and MS do sleep together along with a few other software renderer

Apparently 780G+, 4500HD and 8200GS are all onboard that is capable.
I have an Intel G33M, it works under Vista but the quality is not good enough for BD/HDDVD playback. The video streaks and I would like to know how to fix it.
Hardware compatibility is a fair question, I stick an Asus 8500GT im the G33 and the performance is much much better...but guess what, that Asus crap is not HDCP compliant !! WTF!!!
