The media is still very expensive so I doubt Blu-Ray burning will become mainstream anytime soon. This technology is still in its early days much like DVD back in those days. We're probably at least 2-3 years away before it hit mainstream. I probably won't buy a Blu-Ray burner until it hits $150-$160. It was at that price point several years ago did I first bought my first Pioneer DVD burner.

blu ray burners
any idea how fast the prices of blu ray burners will drop? how much longer before theyre mainstream. i noticed that new egg has bluray burners for aroun 400 bucks now. there was one that included 1 bluray disk free. that seems pretty good to me.

The pace will pick up now that the market has settled, but as Sgt_Strider mentions, we're still talking a good while before we see HD media on the cheap.

The only way I see Blu-Ray discs becoming cheap is when the Taiwanese and or Chinese companies start cranking out cheap discs to compete with the Japanese made discs. I could be wrong about this, but I'm pretty sure most if not all discs are made in Japan and they're probably of better quality, but cost more than $10 a disc. When I first got into the DVD burning game, my Pioneer DVD burner cost me $169 before tax and each DVD-R 4x media cost about $2.51/disc at that time. I think this was back in 2003 when I was burning games like mad crazy for my PS2.

With the competition gone now there's not a lot of downward pressure on prices.

Don't buy it now as I am also waiting for it to drop. Look at DVD Burners... They used to cost me like $300 like the cheapest back then, and look it now, its only $35... I bet BluRay will have better burning speeds coming too, so just wait and sit tight

The media's not that expensive... you can get them for about $10 per 25GB disc. The problem is that the burners are like $1000. Also, are there any programs that support Blu Ray authoring?

If it hits $100 or lower range mark, I will grab one for sure... Hehe... I just need BluRay discs to copy data files off my hard drive so I can make some room...
