They are working on a software update for the player that is supposed to convert all audio formats to DTS' 1500kbps apparently. Should make for a nice audio improvement once implemented.

The 360 only supports Dolby Digital at the moment so Dolby TrueHD, Dolby Digital Plus and DTS tracks are converted to Dolby Digital. A future software update should be able to enable the higher quality audio formats, if Microsoft releases one (which I believe they will, as the PS3 is supporting audio quality above Dolby Digital with BluRay).
Still sounds pretty good, though. HD-DVD for the win!

It'll require more than software to get TrueHD/DD+/DTS-HD out of the X360. You need analog outputs or HDMI. Optical or Coax won't cut it. MS will however add a DTS encoder, so TrueHD/DD+ can be re-encoded to DTS at 1.5Mbps. This should definitely be an improvement over what you get now. And it'll probably be enough for 95% of people out there. Not for me though =(

Major Nelson mentioned that DTS and with it DD+/TrueHD/DTS-HD re-ecoding is coming in a future update. Timeframe was given as "Soon". I'm not sure if that's Duke Nukem Forever Soon or what, but "Soon".

We'll see, I think TrueHD is definitely a key component of the HD-DVD strategy so hopefully the 360 can get it.

It was to be released in Dec but got pushed back. Boxing day would have been a great time to snag one. I ended up going for the xbox addon to tide me over.
I was hoping for more Blu-ray and HD DVD movie deals but amazon.com seems to still be cheaper.

Just a heads up for anyone thinking about buying a BluRay player:
Except massive price drops between now and Summer 2007. The BluRay camp managed to solve their supplier issues for the key componants of the systems. Real mass production will begin early in the new year, and with lot's of brand competition, prices will be dropping very quickly.
Yes, that DOES mean we'll see BluRay players cheaper the HDDVD players in all likelyhood.
And to answer the next question, which I'm sure will be something like "but the HDDVD players will be dropping in price too right?"
Well, yes... once Toshiba teaches LiteON how to make their drive, Toshiba HDDVD players will become a little cheaper. But Toshiba's big plan for cost reduction was to get all the cheap Chinese manufacturers making HDDVD players.... except that those manufacturers found they could make a lot more money making/selling EVD players within Asia... Also, Toshiba forgot to secure the needed manufacturing parts for true mass production, and still hasn't solved that problem yet. So with their equipment already being sold so cheap, there is little chance it will drop further, unless they manage to solve some of those problems.
Hrm, why is it I'm not surprised by any of this

Some do PM on Boxing Day.
I took the XMen :The Last Stand Blu-Ray DVD up to the cashier at Wal-Mart when I was buying a few other items, figured I'd give it a shot.
I showed her the ad from FS showing it for "$21.99,Limited Quantities",and she didn't even hesitate to approve it on the spot.
There wasn't even a line-up,so she wasn't just doing it to push me through.
Even got another XBox 360 for the bedroom(OK,so I'm lazy and for $300 I no longer have to re & re it whenever I may wanna play before bed time
)
Also quite a few 2-disc edition DVD's(that were actually GOOD ONE'S) on sale for 2/$10.
Thanks Wally World.....best Boxing Day experience I've had in a long while.
