Too bad a stand-alone unit does not retail for this much. I'll be over it like white on rice.

Ya, the price on this unit is dropping pretty fast. I bought mine at NCIX during Boxing Day/Week sale for $240 + tax/shipping and it came to $262. So, $245 is warm at best.

I am looking for, I think, a dvd player. Is it worth buying something like this? I am a total nul regarding this question and so would appreciated any suggestions. For instance, I think you can buy a cheap dvd player for about forty dollars. what is the best approach?

This isn't a stand alone player. It's a drive for a computer. Right now your best bet would be to pick up a cheaper DVD player then wait until there's a winner in the war and prices begin to fall. Then pick up a Blu-Ray/HD-DVD player.
Realistically there's no point in spending over $100 on a DVD player anymore.

1080p?
Perfect as I run my HT though the computer but does this output at 1080P?Anitec had this on boxing day @ $225 but I passed as there's not enough HD media out there and these things keep dropping in price. Would buy it if it was a HD burner.

Machiveli, thanks for the clarification. Does this dvd player fit the bill, do you think?:
