Why buy a Blu Ray player vs a PS3? Just curious considering the rediculous pricing on a stand alone player.

Ease of use would be the only reason. Some people (especially older non-technical people) just don't agree with the PS3 operating system and have trouble using the controller and setting up the bluray remote.
That being said, PS3 > All Stand Alone Players. There are more firmware updates on the PS3 and it is always having new features added on such as DTS-capability.

[shrug] To match up the look of system components? Don't know all the details, but I've heard repeatedly that the PS3 is better if you want a blu-ray player, because it has a network connection to update the firmware on the player as new blu-ray profiles come out. If a new profile comes out and you have a component blu-ray player with no network connection, you're SOL. Personally I'd go with the ps3 anyways, since you can also use it for games and as a media centre to connect to your computer and player videos, music, pix, etc. Just my opinion.

Personally I'd go with the PS3 as well because of cost and the gaming.
The only disadvantages I can see would be the fact that you cant use a normal universal remote. You have to use the PS3 controller or thier special PS3 remote control.
There have been studys that say that the PS3 uses 5 times more energy then a fridge. One artlicle I read says "In fact, leaving an inactive PS3 on costs nearly $250 a year in electricity bills" How accurate that is, who knows.
If you want the PS3 more for gaming it might concern you that you're wearing out the lazer more using it all the time as a dvd player as well.
It's big, you can't stack other audio/video components on top in your entertainment system

All valid points. I would prefer to have a simple blu ray player instead of the console game, but the price is rediculous and would only pay $150 for one.

ps3 is better. more options out of the box. and you can easily have the ps3 set to auto lanuch a bd disc on insert which is not very hard to do. the point made about the remote is not even valid because a blu ray remote for the ps3 costs only 25 bucks. also a standard blu ray player does not even come close to computing power and hardware inside the ps3.

the 25 dollar remote is ... nice and all but nothing great. Setting it up is a nightmare for those that aren't the best with technology.
The PS3 is a far superior machine, but it is not as simple to use as a standalone player. That being said, anyone that buys a standalone player is either crazy due to it's price and limitations (when comparing it with the ps3) or they do not want to deal with the extras the PS3 brings to the table.
The PS3 is $299 now, I'd buy it ... if I didn't already drop $600 on mine...

As for the point I made about the remote. Alot of people don't like having alot of remotes around. People pay hundreds of dollars to be able to use just one remote. I have a harmony remote that controls all of my electronics with it. If I didnt have that remote I'd have 6 laying around. It even works on my fta satellite and my AirConditioner. If I had a PS3 it would not work on that tho. I agree the PS3 remote can be found cheap. I remember buying it for my bro and paid I think $15 for it by pricematching. Cost was not the point it's having the extra remote. Not a big deal for some but that could be one of the reasons.
I didnt say the PS3 sucks or that it wasnt powerful. OP simply wanted to know why some people would buy a normal BR player intead of PS3. Not everyone wants to play games on a PS3.

If you're going to spend $300 on a "disk player" is mind as well play games too ... is how I see it. Really the only reason i bought a PS3 (that and GT5
).
But with HDMI and fully upgradeable firmware (and you know sony is going to keep up support for quiet awhile) I don't think you can go wrong._______________

Actually, you can use a ps3 with a harmony remote. I'm using it in my setup currently. All you need to do is buy an IR remote for it (best buy sells an intec one or lots of "chinese" ones on ebay, etc).
It comes with an adapter you plug into a usb port on the ps3 and you're set. The only downside is that you can't power off the ps3 with the remote (I just leave it on, it's dead silent and goes into sleep mode).

Standalone bluray, locked firmware, no hard-drive, limited functionality other than playing discs, no thanks
(unless they get cheap like $100 at Xmas)
