I think it depends on your municipality. I know here in Cambridge (ON) we can get free blue boxes from the city works department.

blue box with new home?
Hi everyone,
Just purchased a new home and was wondering if new homes get blue boxes for free? Or how about green box? Or is this something everyone must purchase on their own?
Thanks for any insight

In Brampton you can go to the Recycling Depot on Chrysler Dr. & you show your documents of the new house & you get 2 blue boxes free of charge. I assume you also get the green bin, I still haven't got one yet
I figured they will drop one off at my house like they did for my mother...
