Looks like your going to have to get it towed if you don't put plates or temps on it.
When there's a transfer or ownership..i think it needs to be drive clean tested.
My brother just sold his 1992 535i for $1000.

bought my first car
Hey,
I am the proud new owner of a 1989 BMW 525i. I put in a 500 dollar deposit today after looking at the car. now I have a couple of questions on how to get it home.
-I don't plan on insuring the car until summer season next year but reading the MTO site it stated that I must have insurance in order to get a trip permit/ plates, so basically I just want to get it home and park it how would I go about getting insurance just for that?
-Also does anybody know the canadian redbook value of the a 1989 525i so I know how much I'm going to paying in taxes?.
-Legally to own the car, or to get it put under my name do I have to certify and etest it blah blah blah? again I want to wait until summer season until I do all those things
Thanks, Dan_______________

Car is exempt from emissions if it is 20 years or older.
If the car is going to be parked, you only need to insure it for theft. You can put it into your name as unfit/unplated, meaning you won't have to do the safety/emissions until you are ready to plate it. However, when a vehicle is unfit, you cannot even get a trip permit and must get it towed. You will have to pay the taxes when you put it into your name.
Book value will be on the UVIP, which you also need at the time of the transfer. If the value on the UVIP is less than $1000, you will have to pay 8% PST on your purchase price, $700.

I can probably get it e-tested and certified, but the trip permit. If I don't plan on insuring the car for full coverage until next spring can I still get one if I get it etested and certified?

You don't need insurance at all to buy the car but you won't be able to get plates. No need for any safety or emission in this case but you "can't" drive it. But to warn you, you might get some really high insurance quote if your car was not insured before getting insurance as they question why it hasn't in the mean time and they don't really care. I bought a car before insurance and was giving a 1 star rating since it didn't have insurance before and 6 star if it was, so I had to sell the car to my bro and apply insurance the date it is transfered over to get my rating. Trust me it was a huge rate jump.

O.k, I've got the unfit/unplated thing down. I just want to get it home. so it can be in its future parking space. I want a trip permit to get it home (I hear about them being sold at some auctions) so basically I want something like that so I can drive the car home and too its parking place.

Googling gets you here:
http://www.mto.gov.on.ca/english/dandv/vehicle/temp.htm
Insuring the car is a requirement if you intend to drive it, for any distance, with or without plates. It might be cheaper (though it's also less fun) to just tow it. Congrats on the purchase!Getting a Temporary (Trip) Permit

A Temporary (Trip) Permit is a windshield decal issued for a roadworthy motor vehicle or trailer in Ontario which is either owned/leased by an Ontario resident or a resident of another jurisdiction. It is valid for ten days starting with the date of issue. Permits cannot be obtained before the date of issue. A vehicle displaying a trip permit is exempt from Ontario registration while the permit is valid. A 10-Day trip permit allows vehicles to be driven to licensing offices, garages and for other necessary short-term transportation purposes.
A trip permit can be used by the owner of a vehicle when he/she is required to complete the transfer of ownership of the vehicle within six days of buying the vehicle.
As of December 8, 2004:
* Applicants must pay outstanding fines and NSFs before receiving a trip permit.
* Owners of all vehicles, except laden (loaded) commercial vehicles, are eligible to obtain a maximum of four trip permits per vehicle over a 365-day period.
The redesigned permit has the VIN (Vehicle Identification Number) and the Expiry Date on the side of the permit which is visible from outside of the vehicle.
There are two permits as of December 8, 2004. A blue and white permit is used by motorcycles, passenger or unladen commercial vehicles. A red and white permit is used by laden commercial vehicles.
A trip permit authorizes the operation of a fit vehicle in Ontario:
* with expired/without plates;
* at a higher gross vehicle weight than indicated on the plate portion of the permit of a commercial vehicle registered in Ontario; or
* while moving from one jurisdiction to another (corridor movement).
To apply for a trip permit, take the following items to any Driver and Vehicle Licence Issuing Office:
* your original fit vehicle permit;
* if the permit is not registered in your name, a Bill of Sale from the person named on the permit to you, if available;
* if the vehicle is registered as unfit, a Safety Standards Certificate (SSC) is also required;
* name of your insurance company and policy number. The vehicle to which the trip permit will be attached must be insured at the time when the trip permit is issued.
Applicants must pay outstanding fines and NSFs before receiving a trip permit.

Dec 18th, 2006 11:52 PM #10like other have already said and which i am repeating, if you do not have insurance on the car you cannot get it plated, much less drive it on the road. to get it from a to b you will have to get it towed.
