Thanks to mdc3000:
Almost all LED's DO NOT HAVE A GLASS SCREEN. There are varying degrees of GLOSS put on the PLASTIC screens, but they are certainly not GLASS. Sony, Sharp, LG, Toshiba all use mostly matte finish plastic, while Samsung does use a HIGH GLOSS plastic that gives the reflection appearance of glass, but IS NOT GLASS.

The amount of false/misinformation in this thread is pretty staggering.

If you're thinking of an LED for this year, best models to look for are Samsung D6500, Sony EX720 and LG LW5700 IMO. Those have the most bang for your buck, with a robust feature set - at least 120hz processing for smooth fast motion, 3d capability and with the exception of the Sony, wifi out of the box. The models higher up in the line from these companies are very good too but will most likely cost a lot more. The lower ones aren't bad if you don't need the same features. The Samsung d6000 will be on-sale everywhere which has the Smart TV functions and is 120hz, but the picture isn't nearly as nice as the d6500. The addition of 3d, slimmer bezel and wifi built in make it worth the extra money IMO.

The LG is great if you're looking to get into 3d without breaking the bank. The passive 3D glasses are cheap and if you're sitting far enough away, the effect looks great. Yes, when watching 3D you're only getting 540p, vs full 1080p that active glasses provide, but the LG's picture is crisp and motion processing is very good - also includes Wifi out of the box and LG's app store has a lot of good stuff in it.

The Sony ex720 is decent but I'd favour the Samsung over it for sure. No wifi built in but it does have 240hz and is 3d capable, so if you're watching a ton of sports, it's a decent set. Of course 240hz motionflow is overkill when watching stuff like movies and can provide that 'soap opera effect' but the picture quality on the Sony is quite good.

Plasma seekers should keep an eye on Panasonic ST30/GT30/VT30, Samsung D6500 or higher if you're looking for a full featured 1080p set. If not, we'll see hot deals on stuff like the 720p Samsung D450.

The Panasonic stuff (ST and up) has wifi out of the box, 3D capable, anti-glare filter so it's more versatile in any room and fast acting phosphors for exceptional contrast and very deep blacks. For sports and movies, these TV's are amazingly good. You'll also get a free copy of Avatar on 3D Blu-ray when you get a panny, the only way to currently get that disc.

The Samsung 6 series and up are similarly featured but typically costs more than the Panny equivalent.

If you're looking for a TV this boxing day, it'll definitely help to do a bit of research beforehand so you know what will work best for you and what TV you should be on the lookout for.

Cant wait to get a big ass screen tv for boxing day. Looking out for a 55" Sony BRAVIA LED Smart TV and a home theater system to go with that :) I have noticed that futureshop seems to have cheaper TV's than BestBuy for some reason, even though they are owned by BestBuy. I found some random stores advertised on kijiji that are selling mainly samsung smart tv's and other brands aswell with no tax. Hmmm I think you could save a good couple of hundred bucks that way. If they can price match the same model TV with the big retailers or give it even cheaper and give no tax plus throw in a hdmi cable, or maybe a blu-ray player, then that would be sweet. OH and thanks for starting this thread tickyboy. :cheesygri

Don't really know if you need calibration... you can find user calibrations online and it's also personal preference... I think we will see 55" LEDs for as low as $999 for entry level models, so hold onto your receipt...

42" and under is a really broad category, someone probably isn't gonna be cross-shopping a 24" TV and a 40" one. You should split that into 24" and under, 25 to 32, and 33 to 42.
