jed - the same people who make your Dell, Acer and Gateway make the HP/Compaq machines - incl. same motherboard (just a diff. shape/name)... so how can you (and everyone else) love and hate them at the same time???

ok. Just my cynical mood.
So you see what I mean now, by HP's, Dell's or pretty much any brand - exact same CPU/RAM/HDD will have the EXACT same motherboard.
Just the ODM has changed the shape, to fit the "Big Name" design.
I'd love to be in on a conference call with one.
Qanta: Ok, we have these 5 Notebook designs we'll be launching next year. Who wants which?
HP: We'll take Slide 3
Dell: Oh hell no! We're taking Slide 3, as you got to choose last year!
Sony: Screw you Dell and HP, you've chosen first for the last 4 years, it's OUR turn!
Apple: Screw all of you! We're taking the "Unibody" since it'll look better as a Mac Book Pro anyway.!!
Quanta: Ok, Slide three, Unibody Aluminum goes to Apple. Who wants slide 1?
Dell: Fine, we'll take that.
HP: We'll take 2.
etc etc hahaha_______________

I didn't know that... kind of glad that I picked Asus for my latest one. Having said that though, at least in terms of my decision, a lot more than the actual product itself went into it. For example even if a Macbook and a Dell are mechanically similar and of comparable quality, I would much rather deal with Apple's support and warranty process than Dell's. Same with Gateway, it's not so much that their machines aren't reliable, just that my impression is that if it breaks I might as well throw it out rather than try to get them to support their product. At least for me, having a working computer is pretty much priceless. If it breaks, sure I'll pay an extra $100 or whatever it is to get it fixed tomorrow rather than next week or next month or whenever the RMA pinball machine stops. That's why for my past few notebooks I was more than happy to pay the "Apple Tax" for the privilege of being able to take it into the store and physically force someone to look at it right now if it breaks, rather than have to send it off in a box and play the he-said she-said game over the phone.

You got me!

But I've had less issues with the aformentioned more so than any others - I've literally a pile of hp's/compaqs. Certainly I'm not representative. But the Dell's especially, have the ability to run i8kfangui which, maybe it doesn't make a diff, sure makes me feel better. And I've got some REALLY old Dells/Acers/Gateways still ticking.
And, I don't "love", I added "like"
