Bringing Gifts into the US

Hi, I have a question re: custom and declarations. Since it's christmas time, I will be bringing a few gifts down to the states to where I am travelling. I am just wondering if I will get taxed/duty on them if they are gifts!. Do i need to throw away the packaging and say they are mine???? Should I bring the receipts too just incase they ask how much they are?

Any help will be appreciated..

My experience is that the Americans are not near as anal as the Canadian Customs folks. Just don't wrap the gifts if there would be any doubt it looks funny in the xray machine or they will open it.
Reciepts are always a good thing through any Customs area and as long as you do not bring too much softwood lumber, they should leave you alone. (LOL)

where I belong
I remembered reading on RFD stating that American has like $500+ limit

Sucks to be the other way around, where our limit is awfully low, and hence gov't wanting to change the law
since ppl carrying $1000 stuff looks the same as ppl carrying a bomb (according to CBC)
