Building my frist system- A X4 9850 BE.....pros/cons?

Hey guys, any recomendations on parts when I put this together?

So far im going to be purchasing the


9850 x4 black edition
250 GB segate baracuda 7200 RPM

ozc 700 w game xtream PSU


what else should I get to put this together? or should I Stear away from the AMD system?

I'd say steer away from the 9850 be, insted wait till next friday & invest in a phenom II 940 black edition insted.

You'll want to look at a AMD 790FX-B motherboard or 790GX to run it on as well.

Also invest in a 4 gig kit of the OCZ Platiun or Reaper DDR2 1066 ram to get the max benefits of the cpu.

invest in a 500 gig + hard drive as games nowadays are gettin in the 7+ gig. install range.

powersupply is 1 i have is great but the corsair tx620 is a popular one at the moment, but if I might sugest move from the gamexstreme to the 700 watt elitexstreme as its more efficient vs the gamexstreme powerwise.

If money is a problem then defiantly stick with the AMD kinda build I've mentioned cause if your wanting to build just as advanced intel system your gonna be spending quite abit more for a intel core i7 based system & the Phenom II 940 cpu preforms between the 2 core i7 920 & 940 builds

Pros: Quad core.
Cons: A rather high TDP. Double/triple check that the mobo supports processor.

Pros? Can't think of any unless you're an AMD fanboy.
Cons? Poor performance per dollar, high TDP.

You might want to wait for Phenom II. The Phenom II X4 chips are supposed to be very good, competitive with equivalently priced Core i7 CPUs. When you take into account the cheaper motherboards and memory though, you'll save $250+.

As for a power supply, anything over 500W is overkill unless you're running a multi-GPU setup (i.e. 4850/4870x2 or SLI/CrossFire).

What GPU are you running? If crossfire is of no interest to you, get a 770 based chipset. They are cheaper and have better spaced out components.

The 790gx isn't worth it if you have a discrete GPU.

well the only reason I went with AMD is because its someome what future proof with the newer chips comming out and I got ....what I think...was a good deal on a chip right now

and a 250 sata seagate baracuda HDD (oem)

for 240 total.

I then got the asus m3a78-T mobo which supports up to 140 W CPU, and crossfire. The m3a79-T was about 50+ more and I dont plan on ever doing a quad crossfire ( insanely expensive )

the thing about the asus board is that its am2+ and supports the new phenon II chips that are comming out. So when they drop in price its a matter of swapping CPU only and im more or less current gen hardware. ANd the 9850 isnt too shabby for the enst year or so as it is

My understanding is that Phenom IIs are comparable in performance to the low end Intel Quads. I expect Intel to start slashing prices on their cheap parts, and AMD to follow suit. If you can wait a few weeks for the build, it'll get interesting.

According to the 1 link someone on here posted, the Phenom II 940 bounces around the c2q 9550, core i7 920 & 940 on stock speeds across all of them

Your original post asks what else you should get, or whether you should stay away from the AMD system.

You then mention you've already bought the CPU, PSU, and HD.

I'm confused as to what exactly you're asking? Are you just asking for reassurance that you made the correct choice in picking the cpu?...

I purcahsed the CPU today, now im just talking about the build. Was it a good deal that I got? I think it was the best way for me to go in order to save some cash and get a decent system

That board may fry if you put that 9850BE on it. The M3A78-CM would likely be okay, however. Check the CPU support on the manufacture's website before buying a board. Most boards under $200 will not support the 125W/140W Phenoms.
