Buying new phone outright and keeping same plan

I have a contract with Telus which is currently expired. Somehow I got on a bring-your-own-device plan (I didn't, I think I got switched to this after my contract expired). I have a lot of discounts and I'll never get the same deal if I get a new contract. Can I buy a new phone (it's an iPhone) outright and just put the sim card in? Will they "know"???

They will know and not care.
buying your own phone, that is what everyone is doing to keep their good plan

Check if your discount will continue after your contract end, most discount given by carrier have a expiry date.
