for tire size, you can use the calculator:
http://tiredepot.com/calc.html
I think mazda 3's should com with either 195/65/15 or 205/55/16 or 215/50/17.
Maybe some more information on what you have on right now would help.

buying new rims
i'm thinking about buying new rims for my Mazda 3:
size: 17x7.00
pcd: 5x100/114.3
offset: 48
will this rim fit properly? and how do i find the right tire size for my new rims (is it 215/40/17)?
your help is appreciated. Thanks!

From 1010tires.com it looks like the closest matching 17" tire (which also came stock on the 2004 Mazda 3 s hatch) is 205/50R17
If you prefer a wider tire, you can go to 215/50R17 as it's only off by 1.9%_______________

The offset for his stock rims on his Mazda 3 is +50mm. The +48mm offset rims he's looking at should be fine.

what i meant is....by look at the new rims that im getting, how do i know which tire size/specs to get??? because i don't think the numbers (e.g.,215/40/17) are displayed on the rims.

The rolling circumference of your original tire is what dictates what size of tire you need for the new rim. ie. that 17" rim can be used on your car, Protege 5, and a CX7, but they all have a different size of tire.
You should stay within a small percentage (around 3-4% of your original rolling circumference) so you don't screw up your speedometer.
If you need something visual, go to http://www.miata.net/garage/tirecalc.html
On the left side, enter the stock size tire. (should be 195/60R15)
On the right side, enter the sizes suggested above (205/50R17, 215/50R17)
You can then see the outline of the rolling circumference of your original tire, and you should try to match your new 17" tire to it (or as close as possible)Last edited by kmltick; Jul 4th, 2007 at 12:39 PM.

You are correct, fortunately he's only going to a 7" wide rim (from a 6.5" I think). There are also other things to consider that I didn't mention such as the width of the tire and its relation to suspension components. But if he stays within the tire sizes suggested, he should be fine.
