Cable speeds are regulated by the cable modem itself. Cable hacking is basically resetting the modem with your own speed settings and or reflashing the firmware to allow manual control of the speed settings. The Motorola SB5100 is one of the hardest to hack since you need a special cable and header to reflash the firmware (I believe it's called a Blackcat cable) in order to easily reset speed settings, it is also popular with ISP's for this exact reason. Many people get caught because they set things way too high, but if you're careful you can get away with it. For example, getting an express package but setting your speeds to the extreme package. Hacking or modifying your modem in anyway is strictly against TOS/AUP (note: this still applies if you actually own the modem because you're changing settings set by the ISP) and is extremely easy for an ISP to see/check should they suspect anything. However, if caught, you will be blacklisted and could face legal/criminal charges.
You cannot compare cable modem hacking to FTA or stealing cable TV - it is far more dangerous if you don't know what you're doing.

+1 imo its not really worth it for the *minimal* speed increase, minimal referring to a safe speed increase

May 14th, 2008 12:11 AM #5No. If you don't subscribe then your line is not "active" and thus you cannot connect to their network. Same theory as DSL. The only way it will work for that situation is if the line was previously active and the company forgot to deactivate it. This rarely happens for Internet and is generally caught quickly now that bandwidth usage is tracked. You've got a far greater chance at finding an active cable signal than Internet. cause my buddy told me about this and i was like wow i know someone who is doing this too....and its not about getting faster speed? its more of getting free internet cause your connection at home is rerouting to someone elses opened line or something... Originally Posted by Digital_Domain
