Calories on GPS watch doesn't make any sense

Hi,

I am looking at my stats on GarminConnect for my gps watch and can't understand how they calculate the calories burned for hiking.

Here is my run of yesterday :
Distance : 6.42km
Time : 39m12s
Pace : 6:06 min/km
Total elevation : 9m
Calories : 625
Link : http://connect.garmin.com/activity/400628583

According to some sites, I get around the same number so it looks fine for running.

And then some hiking from the last week-end :
Distance : 12.05km
Time : 4h16m22s
Pace : 21:16 min/km
Total elevation : 530m
Calories : 830
Link : http://connect.garmin.com/activity/399813079

According to other websites, I am suppose to burn around 1320 calories.

Who is right ? Why does the watch can't figure the right number ? Looks like basic math with weight, distance, time and elevation ... if it's right for running, it should be for hiking, no ?

Is there a choice other than casual walking when you hike? Possibly then the elevation you climbed would be factored in.

My wife just got one of these watches but I haven't explored the options so just guessing.

The garmin is likely not taking elevation into account when doing its calorie calculations. For the distances and paces done, those calories look pretty reasonable
