CAN compatible scanners. Where to buy?

Only place I can see one where I can walk into a store and pick one up is Canadian Tire but they are selling that one for $249.99

I got a CEL on my Mazda6 yesterday 6 hours after installing a Magnaflow catback exhaust system on it. Want to see if its exhaust related or not.

Anyone know of any good cheap CAN compatible scanners out there?

I think you are refering to OBDII. CAN is totally different.

OBDII has been used on all cars since 1996.
CAN (controller area network) will be the standard and is mandatory on all cars as of 2008. Some cars models are using CAN already.

I have the 3110 model and although pricey, I'd say it was worth it. It just happened to be on sale when my MIL came on. Replaced a DPFE sensor and cleared the code, and still saved a couple of bucks over taking it to a shop. I see on the Equus/Innova site that they have a lower cost one now available http://www.canobd2.com/tool/3030.asp It says 79 bucks US online so it might still be considered too dollar intensive. One word of caution about these - once your friends and family find out you have one, you'll be doing a lot of scans

Seems like you are right. I didn't know that CAN will be mandatory for autos in 2008. I don't know much about OBDII, I think it's based on J1850. But CAN is getting very popular (specially CANOpen). Industiral machinary and trains are already using CAN, It's even in use in some planes.

How much did you get yours for? My CEL came on last night and went out again today. i think its my Magnaflow exhaust causing it. Need to confirm. Would the computer still store the code that triggered despite it going away?

Sorry for the long response...............time . I think I paid $199 for mine on sale at canadian tire ( scraped up every last 10cent canadian tire cash that I had and got another $50 off ) I believe the MIL will go out after 3 consecutive "drive cycles" where the fault does not occur, and will clear from the stored memory after 40-80 drive cycles depending on the code. I think a drive cycle is counted for every time the engine is started from cold, comes up to temperature, and all of the sensors output a specified signal.

at > 200 US a pop, they are quite expensive but very easy to use. it doesn't really get cheaper my friend for something robust and proven. there are the "hack" solutions that you can buy that probably do the same thing, i've never tried it though. something like this: http://www.canpic.com/ . or, if you are REALLY handy with microcontrollers you can make them yourself, just search on the net. but that's a project in itself.

edit: this shiznet is not designed specifically as an automobile scanner. sooo make sure you know what you want.
