Can you tell which drive is in an external enclosure?

Looking to buy a WD My Book external enclosure, shuck it for a WD red drive - for NAS use. Is there any way to confirm what drive is inside before taking it apart and risk damage and not being able to return it?

No.

The model # changes depending on the controller (i.e. USB, or a port multipler) its connected to.

Otherwise everyone would do that before shucking... lol

Exactly which external are you looking at?

If you can get the 8 TB external from Best Buy USA when it's on sale, it's likely to have a red: https://www.bestbuy.com/site/wd-easysto ... Id=5792401
Yeah, I can't easily get from BB USA. Was looking at the 6TB my book. The very newest amazon review says they received a wd red... but that's about it in terms of reports of what people got.

Yep that's the one

And hmm - seems like people say passmark disk checkup can tell you what's inside
I have two of the Best But USA external drives I linked in an earlier post. I used the trial version of ActiveSmart to find the drive model inside the USB enclosure: http://www.ariolic.com/activesmart/

I just ran ActiveSmart with the drive installed in it's WD enclosure and the drive inside is identified as a Wd Red: https://www.amazon.ca/OEM-Drive-drive-2 ... B00V5I65NW

Windows 7 Device Manager sees the drive as a WD easystore 25FB USB device.
