This and the same for the US to a lesser extent or Russia. China have had a program where olympians marry and have kids who are then trained from an early age for sports and it's their full-time job. Canadian or most other athletes are amateur athletes. The Americans have far more funding for sports across all levels (think about how popular college sports are in the US compared to here...exactly, we don't even have big support for jnr hockey outside of small cities).

India has a 1 B+ population but they obviously aren't breeding athletets or spending $ the way China is.

I'm personally okay with us doing avg as long as our actual sports teams like soccer team or rugby team or cricket team improve while hockey is maintained. Sports like gymnastics and polo are nice and all but no one cares about them outside of every 4 yrs. We also tend to emphasize team sports more. The gov't does need to fund more $ in certain things like sports but hopefully it's team sports which more people can enjoy or participate in or follow rather than weightlifting or bobsledding.

I think we should compare ourselves with other top countries. using 3rd world countries as an excuse will not lead us anywhere

It takes a lot of investment to train athletes that can compete on the world stage. In the summer games, most of the medals are in Athletics and Swimming, both sports that we struggle at.

But regardless, we should still be proud of their accomplishments. Despite only one gold, we have 10 medals with a week to go!

Well baseball does come in and out of the Olympics. I specifically remembered the 2008 match between Canada and Japan (in which we lost). We also won't be seeing baseball in 2016 Rio.

The Athletes need more funding, facilities, and investment in youth so they can get a head start. I also find Canada current medal count embarrassing its a damn shame when I hear Canadian athletes on the Fan590 begging for donations and sponsorship just so they can continue training

The Olympics has always been a competition between superpower countries.

Don't forget some countries train their kids or select able kids at a very young age and train to do only one thing and be punished if they do wrong. Come Olympic time, they will homebrew these sports machines kids with no passion to win fame for their country.
