Spend $10 or more on food at an SPG restaurant. A few tips on how to do this:

• That's $10 excluding tip and alcohol. This "counts" as a stay for the purposes of SPG point expiration (but not towards Gold/Plat status).
• Make sure it is an SPG restaurant and not just a chain restaurant that is located in an SPG hotel. The "test" for this is whether you could charge your meal to your room. If it is not an SPG restaurant you would have to always pay the restaurant directly. You could call the restaurant and ask if you can charge your meal to your room.
• Since you aren't a guest at the SPG hotel (so it won't go through your room charge), you have to present your SPG card and request points. They will need to fill out a multi-part form to do this.
• Keep your receipt in case you need to follow up with SPG for the points.
• Don't leave this to the last minute. Do it at least a month before your points expire in case there are any delays in posting the points. It is relatively easy to get them to post missed points. It is much harder to re-establish expired points.

I'm probably making it sound more complicated than it is, but it is important to do it "right" so you get the points and don't lose your SPG points to expiry.

These are good advises, but I want to add...

The restaurant can be a chain restaurant. For example, I like Carver`s Steakhouse which has locations at Calgary, Richmond, Saskatoon, Ohio,
Oregon, Atlanta, North Carolina etc...I had dinner on Saturday Jan. 14 and the points were posted on Jan. 15.

The server apologized for talking longer to process my bill because she had to go to the Front Desk to process my Amex & SPG card.

Edit: Carver`s Steakhouse usually a stand-alone restaurant, and not usually associate with Sheraton. Only the Calgary and Saskatoon locations are within Sheraton Cavalier.

I managed to apply using the free first year plus 15,000 bonus code. I'd canceled my previous Amex SPG early last year (March or so I believe) so I was worried they would make a fuss since it had been less than a year. During the application they said I was conditional approved but later it said they would need to further review my application and would get back to me in 10 business days. I got my card today and it does say first year free for the annual fee so it seems like everything went off without a hitch.

Same here. Cancelled early last year too, applied again and got the card a few days ago with no issues. I don't see why they wouldn't want our business back..even with the point freebees and no annual fee. They make a % on every single purchase we make on the card even if we pay off the full monthly balance and never pay a single penny of interest.

Applied for mine (Free promo) and approved, just waiting for the card now.

Applied for my wife this morning, conditionally approved.

So 30,000 points for Free.

Planning on Cancelling in about 6 months time.

Dammit, I missed this thread before I signed up!

Anyways, something wierd just happened. I signed up for this card this past Saturday and yesterday, I got a letter in the mail that says:

Dear MasterXan

Thank you for choosing AMerican Express.

We were unable to process your application for the Starwood Preferred Guest Credit Card from American Express.

We regret to inform you that the Starwood Preferred Guest Credit Card from American Express you applied for has changed. We invite you to talk to one of our Customer Service Representatives about our products by calling 1-866-318-2639 (AMEX)..............

I only typed a portion of the letter that caught my eye. What's up with that?

Just now, I checked my e-mail and I got an e-mail that said my application got approved.

I don't get it. Wasn't the letter a rejection letter? And if it was, shouldn't rejection letter say why you are rejected?
