[Canadian Tire] $12.89 - Electronic Caliper with Metric and Imperial Display (Mastercraft)

It’s back on sale again:
$12.89 -- Mastercraft Electronic Caliper with Metric and Imperial Display
https://www.canadiantire.ca/en/pdp/mast ... 6800p.html
Image
Unlike many, this model can toggle between fractional and decimal inches.
It displays millimeters, decimal inches and fractional inches
(Resolution: 0.01mm, 0.0005" and 1/128")
A similar one sells for $24.99 at Princess Auto https://www.princessauto.com/en/detail/ ... -p8609265e#

If you’re looking for something that doesn’t require a battery, don’t need fractional inches and don’t mind paying more, these also appear to be decent (based on reviews):

Bought it last time and don't regret it - it's handy to have in the tool chest.
Basil: Well, may I ask what you were expecting to see out of a Torquay hotel bedroom window? Sydney Opera House, perhaps? The Hanging Gardens of Babylon? Herds of wildebeest sweeping majestically -?

That’s Probably more accurate than the garbage these days.

Too bad rotors can’t be measured with these. Brake calipers are way more expensive.

These will measure the width of the ‘lip’ on the rotor, rather than the slightly thinner area where pads meet the rotor.

Buy a set of "outside calipers". Transfer your measurement to your electronic caliper. I seem to think Princess Auto has a set of inside and outside calipers that go on sale from time to time.

Edit: Here's the link Measuring set

Use two quarters against the rotor.

Subtract the size of the quarters from the reading.

I usually just use one of these (6 for $12.50) Image

They are surprisingly good, however this thread's digital caliper, in addition to being easier to read, can also take differential measurements (by zeroing the display between measurements), and the jaws can be fixed in position.

Those are fine if you need mm precision.
I happen to like sub mm.

Nope. That's why I'm on the internet arguing with strangers. If I had anything better to do I'd probably be doing it.

The plastic Vernier calipers can actually measure to 0.05mm (1/20 mm).

These calipers are okay, but loaded with grinding dust. Mine did not slide easily at first. They will operate more smoothly if you disassemble them completely and clean the metallic grunge out thoroughly. I sprayed mine with a Teflon spray lube as well. They now feel better. Repeatability seems to be about 0.0005", which is decent for a cheap tool like this.

Oh. In that case I have no idea how to use them....

Bought this on Saturday. There is a screw you tighten by hand to lock them on your measurement. That stripped on first use. Battery cover is flimsy too. Will try to exchange. Saw another brand right beside these on sale for 19.99. Cant find those on the website though. Kind of wish I bought those instead. For what I will use them for and how often, cheap is ok I guess.
