Got these during the last sale 6 months ago. Yes they take 4AA batteries that take up 70% of the actual length. The lights are nice. Helps me see how much I'm seasoning my food.

Cons
The capacity is kinda small. They've got odd colours. I settled for red and green.

To those wondering why electric? For me I have athritis and sometimes simple movements like grinding salt or pepper may seem easy for you but difficult amd painful for people like me.

Does anyone know if this would grind flax seeds?

I don't see why not. It's adjustable so should be able to

I'm currently using a manual pepper grinder, but it takes about 500 cranks to get a teaspoon of ground flax, so I'm thinking it's not something I will sustain long term. Maybe I'll pick this one up and give it a try. Not a lot of risk here @ $6.99.

Very good grinder, have been using it for the past few months and works great. Bought them on clearance for $4.99. Still a good deal for $6.99

Update: Been using it for a couple of days. Too early to figure out if this will last long. But it works great and worth the $7!

thinking about it, flax seed, the stuff you buy at bulk barn is semi oily. There isn't any way an electric pepper grinder can grind this well. Likely if you try it for 10 mins you'll get some mushed up lump that doesn't resemble powder.

I would love to see someone here try it for real.

also bought two fishing rods on clearance too -- just couldn't resist. It's the RFD in me.

What's a good manual one? And what's the best material for the grinder, ceramic or some sort of metal or something else?

What is in these electric grinders, ceramic or plastic?

I'm also looking for a manual grinder that maximizes ground pepper per unit of effort or number of revolutions. This is not something to cheap out on!
technically not designed to be reusable, you can get the Kirkland ones at Costco and unscrew it then refill it, making it reusable. Google it.

It seems there is a difficulty with the flax seeds, but it's not the oiliness, it's the size. They're just too darned small. When the mill is set to the coarser grind, the seeds fall right through. When I tightened up the grind, I had the same problem as with my manual grinder, 500 revolutions to produce an infinitesimal amount of flax dust. I'll try again tomorrow and see if I can find the coarseness sweet spot, but it's not looking very promising.

only reason I bought this is so I could use the abundance of AA batteries I have lying around collecting dust. Seems fun to use

Why don't you use a coffee grinder? The black and decker one is only around $16 and works much better than pepper mill.
