Canadians driving to US with only Citizenshipcard and Drivers License after 1June09?

First off I do feel stupid for being in this position so please do not flame me as it is already stressful enough . I made a last minue reservation for NYC and intended to drive down Monday but just found my 15Jun expired passport. So I really only have two options. Postpone trip by minimum a day and get passport first thing Monday morning. Or leave the reservation, still apply for passport but attempt to cross the border (I am in GTA) and cross my finger. So depending on successrate I may choose one or the other. Any feedback is appreciated

Thanks for the reply. I have been searching online for real accounts and found a handful of travelers that have been allowed to enter the US without complying with the new regulation with just a warning but officially
you must have valid passport, enhanced drivers license or one of those pre-screening IDs. This was even stated in the link you provided, only children under 15 can get through with just CC and gov Photo ID

i rmemeber also reading somewhere that if you are traveling by land or sea it is not necessary to have the passport as long as you have other valid documents.. hmm..

That has changed starting this June 1.

You require a passport or some other enhanced ID, such as the enhanced driver's licence or NEXUS Card.

A van full of colleagues were on their way to NY on buisness and when they got to Ogdensburg, two of them forgot their passport. No go. They had to go back and get them.
This was last week. It seems that the grace period may have ended at some (maybe all) locations.
Fact is, it is their border, they can do what they want and do not have to show any courtesy at all. I have absolutely no problem with that.

Another friend just told me that he remembers mention of a two week transitional grace period which has past now so i guess chances are too high to take without getting more actual accounts I will just have to postpone my trip

I just crossed the border without a passport and they let me through without saying a word.
