You're doing yourself a great disservice by not watching it, but yeah Oz is great too.

Can't get into the Wire, reccomend me a new series
So I've never really followed a TV drama series before, but this year I've watch Breaking Bad and I am absolutely hooked. I love the show and especially the characters. I'm caught up on all the episodes and was looking to watch something in between the new episodes. The Wire was very highly rated and praised so I thought why not? I'm almost done Season 1, and I don't see the big deal. I like the characters (especially Herc) and the storyline but I'm not hooked on it enough to invest another 4 seasons into it. For example, when Keema got shot I didn't care for it at all. I also find too much time is devoted to the police politics, which = boring. Can anyone recommend a new series? How is Oz?

I think the problem is that your favorite character is Herc...
I loved season 1, which I felt was one of the best season (alongside season 3).
Season2 is a bit of a snoozer, but is very important in terms of the overall series plot.
Oz is decent. Breaking Bad is a great show. So is the Sopranos_______________

Sons of Anarchy would be my newest of series to get. Along with Dexter, True Blood, Mad Men (slow, but good) and Justified (still waiting on Season 2 Blu-ray/DVD release announcement)

- Dexter, although it starts off slow, it really picks up
- I just watched season 1 of Suits and was hooked
- The Walking Dead only had 6 episodes for season 1 and it was fantastic
- And my personal favourite, Game of Thrones

IDK what to say, if you like Breaking Bad then you should like The Wire too... When Kima got shot that was more about the effect it had on the police/drug dealers "relationship"

I don't necessarily agree with everything I say.

I gave The Wire a chance and finished all 5 seasons but I still couldn't see the fascination with it.
Anyways, +1 to Sons of Anarchy, Walking Dead and Game of Thrones and you should check out Boardwalk Empire too.

It really depends on what you're looking for in a tv show. If you come into the Wire thinking you'll get a lot of police action, then you'll be disappointed. It's about the politics of cops and drug dealers. Personally, I like it for the characters, and the fact that the show seems more real than a lot of what's out there. In terms of characters, you'll learn to love guys like Omar, Stringer Bell, Bodie, and Bunk. Each season is different though, and it gets better in season 3-4. I personally didn't care much for season 5.
Check out Sons of Anarchy - it's not as politically charged as The Wire, and it's a pretty good show. Dexter, Six Feet Under, Mad Men, Game of Thrones, and the Walking Dead are a few of my faves right now too.

Dexter is probably my favourite show, though season 5 was a bit of a let down after 4. Mad Men would also have to be up there.
Just finished watching season 1 of The Walking Dead (pretty easy, only 6 episodes), and really enjoyed that. Will be following it once the new season starts.
And literally just finished watching the series premiere of Boardwalk Empire, which had great reviews, but not sure if it's right for me. May be right for other people.
Might have to look into Sons of Anarchy after all the recommendations here.
And I still have all 5 seasons of the Wire sitting on a hard drive._______________

I would give The Shield a shot. It's a police show as well, however, a very different focus in the direction of police drama. My personal favorite police drama (with The Wire a very close 2nd).
