can't play any media files on HP Pavillion

Any program that attempted to open mp3 or video files will crash! iTune, Windows Media Player, WM Centre, HP media etc. There was a shockwave plugin crashed and I uninstalled/reinstalled it. I did not play any media files before this so I wouldn't know if this was the problem. I can't even play podcasts directly from iTune.

I would need to open the file in chrome, give it permission to play. Then I can play the media files in the regular program while chrome is open. But if I closed chrome, and try the files again, these programs would crash again. Quicktime will play these files occassionally but without sound! What's going on? And how would I fix it?

It's newly installed HP refurbished system, running win 7, 64 bits home edition. I installed k-lite codec file. Thanks

Try uninstalling klite and just using vlc.
