Both will be write off if either driver goes to insurance. Max insurance will offer is $2000 and underwriters of both insurance call each other and have a laugh while offering $2000 for not one but for both cars.

That is easily a 5 k repair but the Altima is probably worth less than 2k and the RAV4 a bit more.

Yeah, most people won't pay more that a grand unless they have a terrible driving record with a couple of accidents. Start looking for another car.

Take it to a reputable place to get it appraised. At a minimum, you need a new bumper, taillight assembly and body work. That is $5000 at least. It would be better to just write off the car.

Yup, write off for sure. And that's without frame damage in consideration. From the looks of the picture, the trunk lid got misaligned. This tells me there's a good chance that the unibody structure got pushed in when the tail light and bumper got hit. The car will need to be thrown on a frame straightener.

From Car-part.com

Tail light $30
Trunk $call (150-250) in black
Bumper (White $100) paint - $350ish
Install - say $400

That's about $1300 with tax. Add $100 for gas/time to pick up the parts. and $2-300 for rental you're at about $1600

This is assuming rebar and anything underneath the sheetmetal is not damaged. I say just go through insurance and write it off.

Insurance would write that off.

It's time to move on and you can find the VQ35 in the next gen too :D

If you go for another Altima, check the passenger floor board area very carefully. They rust to the point you can literally kick a hole in it

Wow that trunk is bent from a parking lot hit...what was the guy even doing?

BTW, back to your previous question, if you did go to file a police report, for most accidents with that amount of damage, police will forward said report to the insurance, which negates the option to settle privately as the insurance will then know of the incident.

No. Call his insurance and go thru that. Settling out of insurance means you allow bad drivers continue to be on the road under the radar of the system. Plus it's hard to collect sometimes from private parties.

If pay out of pocket, take $6K and not a dime less and go buy a new car.

Got hit by a 2003 Rav 4

Approx. whats the damage here in estimate? Not looking to gouge the guy but be reasonable given time, rental, etc.

Thoughts?

I was not there, not sure what he was doing to come that hard into a parked car, must have been cell phone, or hit gas hard taking a spot before someone? No clue at all.. he was putting a note on the car as my father in law was coming out
