Car rental (Hertz vs. Avis)
I plan to rent a car for one week from YYC (calgary airport).
After some search, come down to 2 choices:
1. Avis
Cost: 321 CAD (TAX in)
2. Hertz
Cost 403 CAD (TAX in)
It looks a easy choice to choose Avis for the cheaper price but I have some concern.
My return flight will be 7AM in the morning, Avis opens at 7AM but Hertz open at 6AM.
Which means I can check out at counter from Hertz, compare to drop off the key in a box for Avis.
I will NOT purchase Insurance from rental company, it will cost about 30 CAD PER DAY.
I will use my credit card to cover that.
But after I read some story from web:
http://www.cbc.ca/canada/british-col...udgetbill.html
I just wonder whether will be wise to choose drop at counter than drop in a box for extra peace of mind.
BTW: which you will use to cover the Loss and damage insurance from credit card.
1. Citi Driver' Edge Platinum card.
2. American express platinum CREDIT card. (NOT the Platinum card).
3. CIBC Aerogold Visa Infinite Card.
Thanks

I've rented from Hertz before and the experience was quite pleasant.

yo should carefully inspect the car before you drive it off the parking lot .. checking for chips on winshield is easily missed .. that guy on cbc shoud have inspected the car instead of blaming the rental company .. if he truly had inspected it and there was no glass defect, then rental company is in fault .. but that rarely happens

Not sure if applicable, but Avis allows spouse to drive for free as well.

unless things changed, these 2 are high end rental companies. You should be ok with either of them. Both of them allows spouse to drive. Both of them with corporate contract also allows employees from the same company to drive for free also.

We rented from Avis when I was out west at YVR last month. It was good that we got insurance. We got a brand new Jeep Wrangler with 10KMs on it. On the way back from Whistler it started leaking oil, an oil pipe busted. All the oil leaked out and they got us to drive it about 3 KM (lucky) to the Avis in Whistler. We needed to stop a few times because the engine started overheating.
I can give them credit that the transition to another car was smooth.
For the inconvenience we complained at Vancouver airport and they paid for most of out gas bill.

It was leaking Oil and they told you to keep driving?
They paid for most of your gas? But they did not discount the rental itself?
odd.

Yes, I found that odd too that they told us to keep driving. We left it in the front and left a big oil puddle on their nice roundabout. The guy went to park it and it was smoking.
The reason why they didnt discount the rental itself is because we already got a free upgrade from the start. We got that Jeep for the price of a midsize. When we got a brand new Jeep as an upgrade it was pretty sweet at first.

Ahhh. I usually rent from Dollar where a jeep liberty is considered a full size. They also had Rav 4's that people were fighting over (at a self select airport lot).
I may have taken the jeep off roading.
