Unless you hand wash your car, car wash will kill your paint. Slowly but surely.
Also, do not go into the "new" car wash bay!!! It will scratch your car very badly.

One of the members on G35Driver recently polished a car that was used at an automated carwash for 4 years; he did a great job but it definately was not an easy task. Here is how the paint looked

Automatic washes will make swirls on your car eventually. Just look at the mass and velocity of those brushes - if they were really soft enough to touch your car with that kind of power, they'd need to be replaced every week and the cost would go up astronomically.
Save automatic carwashes for emergencies:
Like when you're late for something, want to show up with a clean car and you're already wearing a suit so you can't hand wash it yourself.
Or you want to rins some salt off the car but it's -20C and you just can't handle being outside for even 5 minutes in the wash bay.
Shouldn't be more than 3-4 times a year.

The only time I pay for a car wash is for those charity car wash with high school cheerleaders.
