Um... its only fare to ask everyone chip in a certain amount a week for GAS.... its understandable since gas is so expensive these days.
Long gone are the days of $0.35L gas and driving everywhere without complaining about cost.

carpool at work questions
how do you get a coworker to pay for fare without bluntly asking? i'm devising a cup in my cup holder labelled "Fare" or "Tips" and have them figure it out.
furthermore if you were the carpool-ee would you prefer to pay $2 one way home to your door or take the bus [even if you had a metropass]; and the ride home was offered at 11:30PM when i finished my shift. so remember although you do have a metropass would you still request that carpool ride home at night?
sorry if the situation seems confusing you may have to reread the thread again to understand the scenario. thanks

I would initially make intentional stops at a gas station. Usually they get the hint.

How did you get into a carpool situion without making it clear?
I wouldn't just start carpooling people and not iron out at the start what the costs would be.
It's only fair that the people getting the rides pitch in for gas.
Or even share driving duties. That's how I've done it before where I drove one week, and then the other guy drover the next, so on, and so on.

Sep 29th, 2006 11:38 AM #6well, we are "privelidged/cursed" [depending on how you look at it] of owning a vehicle. and with this power comes great responsibility. and i feel one of these responsibilities is to help people who are "unfortunate/fortunate" of not owning a car. sure we pay for gas, insurance, the vehicle itself and costs related to repair and maintenance. is $2 a ride too much to ask for?

if you are a carpool-ee , passenger, i've created a new law for the book of carpool-ee ethics.
1. do not offer to pay, we, as the drivers, will not take it b/c we are too nice.
instead, just toss money onto the passenger seat or a designated cup [i'm asking for $2 or 2x the $/L at the moment, whichever is higher] and close the door and proceed home
2. do not hand us money, because we/i will not take it, once again, drop the money and proceed home.
i used to be carpool-ee myself and i found this to be very effective.

Sep 29th, 2006 11:49 AM #7That is awesome, I like that idea, make a print out of that and stick it somewhere visable.. I should just keep a tip cup in my car all the time. For those "just in case" times when I have to drive ppl home....

never refuse a ride request, even if they don't have money. just be sure it isn't a recurring problem.

bluntly ask! why avoid it.

I don't see why you shouldn't discuss this issue up front, if the carpool is regular
I carpool every day, and we have the "rate" all set
I prepay, and start crossing off dates on the paper calendar every day I ride
occasional "rides" are not carpool's, and should be seen as a "courtesy", as long as you're not offering courtesy rides 5 days a week

Sep 29th, 2006 01:20 PM #11So if they offer you say no. But if they don't just drop money on the ground they're being cheap?

The way it works in my carpool is we all share on the parking pass. At my job a parking pass is 120 monthly. There are 4 of us. We each drive one day a week and then there's a floater day each week, every week. Everyone drives their own day, and you drive your floater once a month.
No one pays for anyone elses gas.
One person pays for the parking pass and everyone else owes them money at the last Friday of each month.

If it's a regular thing and they have offered you money and you don't take it, then I do think it's your fault.
Personally I never charge people if I am going that way anyways, but if I was in a carpool situation I definately would.
If you feel awkward, just put up a tips jar or whatever

i pay my friend 10 bux a week to car pool
does that sound reasonable? Work is about 25km from home .

Sep 29th, 2006 03:31 PM #15I'm not following, you seem to have an issue...you want to get paid...but you also don't want them to offer to pay because you will turn them down? You just want them to sneak the money into your wallet? wtf
