Just bought a cat and PetsMart recommend the "Worlds Best Cat Litter". Ofcourse thats the most expensive one they have. ARe there any comparable ones that reduce smell, able to flush down the toilet, good clumping etc
which ones do you use?

Litter brand that i use
Purina's Maxx Scoop cat litter is what i use. Not flushable unfortunately.
Cheapest at Wal-mart, + i get the $1off coupon from Save.ca.
Sometimes Canadian Tire will have a great sale on the 10kg bag.
President's Choice PC Green is flushable and liked it a lot but too pricey.
Google it and read the comments.Last edited by Cheekee; Aug 27th, 2010 at 03:10 PM.

I've been using fresh4life available at Petvalu. It's one of the cheaper options that we thought we'd try - before that we used Arm&Hammer and I'd say it's comparable.
Can't recall the exact price - I think it was about 7 bucks for 9.5kg

We use fresh4life with the clevercat top entry litter box - cats love it and I love it - reduces the amount of litter that is trailed through the apartment as most of it is caught when they climb out - with the conventional tray with hood they'd sprint out and it'd be everywhere.

We use World's Best. Yes it's expensive, but it does very well odour-wise, clumps and is light - much easier to scoop than a heavy clay clumping litter. We started on this at a vet's recommendation, they said they had seen some cases where cats (especially kittens) that used clay litter had developed internal problems as a result of built up clay, i.e. by licking their paws after going in the litter box etc.

In theory anything that clumps, you shouldn't flush. That's just asking for plumbing problems.
I use the Arm & Hammer stuff... it clumps better than most and is a little better than most at reducing the smell. I combine this with with baking soda and I get virutally no smell. If that Fresh4ife stuff is the same thing, then I'll switch. $15 for the big box of Arm&Hammer gets expensive.
I've tried the natural stuff made from pine. That kills the smell the best, but it's the worst at clumping. Personally I don't like pine smell, so I stopped using it. For those worried about clay and the problems it causes, then pine litters are a very good alternative.
Here's my set up:
I use the corner style litter box with the high walls. Works great when they kick litter against the wall... not so much at the opening. I may switch to the top entry ones.

With Arm&Hammer Super Scoop Unscented + Arm&Hammer baking soda for litter boxes (but that seems like it's discountinued), so I'll just sprikle baking soda... I assume it's pretty mucht he same thing. And a Litter Locker. It's like a diaper genie, but for cats. It's very beneficial for condo/apartment dwellers, but refills are not cheap.

With a 3'x2' litter mat to catch the excess litter that gets kicked out. 2'x3' is the biggest I've found so far and got it recently. So far it seems to work much better than the rubber mats.
All this times 2... for two cats.

I tried World's Best Cat Litter and I liked it, problem was that it turned my white cat yellow. I don't what it was, but it stained my cat's fur. I then switched to Sweat Scoop (made of wheat husks). What I like most was that it was natural, cuz my dog likes to eat whatever the cats kick out of the box. I use to live in an apartment building that had a high dumpster outside the building. At 5'2, I nearly kill myself throwing out the heavy cat litter, so I needed something light.
As for the locker litter, I had that too and I used it for a year. But the refills were too expensive and it was too messy. I use to snag the bag in the roller wheel thingie all the time, and it was such a PITA to clean it up when it leaked all over. I now scoop the cat litter into the doggie waste bag, tie it up and throw it in a dedicated garbage bag beside the litter box. Twice a week, I throw out the garbage bag. Cheaper and waaaaay easier.

I use the litter from Costco. I forget the name of it, but it comes in a big green box. It is very good for odour control and the price is great at 7.99 (i think) for a 22Kg box !!

The price at Canadian Tires vary... The one near me is $8.50. At Walmart, they are $7.99. I cleaned out 3 Canadian Tire's when they did that sale! Cashier asked what the heck those things were and why I needed so many of them. I told her it was for kitty litter and I had a pet lion.

You were over filling it. There's a little hook on the inside of the top part. It's there to cut off the bag. Scissors work better though. If you don't empty the bag before using up the whole refill, then two thing will happen. 1. The bag will snag on the edges leading to spillage. 2. You will go through the refill much faster. With every half turn, you used up the circumference of the waste you currently have in there. When the waste is small, it doesn't use up that much, but when the waste get big, you use up a lot with every half turn. I empty it 3 times with each refill and I think it makes the refills last at least twice as long.
But having said that, your method is still MUCH cheaper. How do you scoop into the small bag? Or do you just reach in there with the bag on your hand? I would much rather do it this way, but thought smell wouldn't be contained as well.

I scoop into the bag. I hold the bag over the litterbox so I don't make a mess. Mind you, I wear gloves (also from the dollar store) because little bits do get on my hands sometimes. The doggy poop bags are also from the dollar store. I tie the bag really tight and then throw into another trash bag. I find it so much easier and it's not stinky either.

I use Special Kitty clumping that I buy at Walmart in a big box. I like it since it lasts a LONG time with just my cat and it's easy to scoop.
Can't say I've even seen these anywhere before. Can you tell me where you got it? Need to upgrade my box since my cat is a kicker and it goes everywhere and it so happens it's in a corner too._______________

I just moved to a condo and since our kitten is a messy poo/pee'er we got him this at Petcetra for a super good price of $25!! It litterly is a cool box as you can lift off the top part to scoop the litter everyday. I've looked around and this Catit design is the best and well cheapest too!
For litter we changed over to crystals and haven't looked back. Works like a charm and no smell too (but that could be we got a dome litter box too). I currently use the Petcetra brand and it's normally on "sale" for $5 for a bag. We use 2 bags for the new litter box and these two bags will last a month so...it's a super hot deal to me. I just scoop daily into a plastic bag and it goes down our garbage chute. I haven't been told to stop doing it so....not sure if I should or not.

For a litterbox, we tried the "top entry" one but the cats wouldn't go in (maybe they're exhibitionists?). In the end we found a regular Rubbermaid keeper box without a lid works best - so many options for size and height depending on how messy your cats are and how willing they are to climb in. We have one with high walls so that everything stays inside pretty well. Better than buying one at the pet store for twice as much, for basically the same thing but with a picture of a cat pasted on it.
